<p><strong>It’s a new year with a new chance to make a new beginning… our chance to make a real difference!</strong></p>
<p>If you’ve been “putting off your greening”, I’m going to give you the<strong> A to Z list</strong> to get the ball rolling. (I think I’ve put together quite the extraordinary list, if I do say so myself!  Be sure to click on the orange links to learn more!)</p>
<p><strong>Hold onto your “green” party hats, and let’s go!…</strong></p>
<p><strong>A</strong><strong> – <span style="text-decoration: underline;">Appliances, Animals</span></strong> – Buy <a href="../2010/ding-dong%E2%80%A6the-washer%E2%80%99s-dead/">energy efficient appliances</a> when you need to make a replacement.  If you’re looking for a ‘cause’ that needs your assistance, <a href="../2010/green-gift-guide-ii-gifts-that-give-back/">donate</a> to help save an endangered species.<br />
<strong>B – <span style="text-decoration: underline;">Bamboo, Biodegradable, Baking Soda</span></strong> – Buy sustainable <a href="../2010/the-beauty-and-benefit-of-fabulous-bamboo/">bamboo products</a> (everything from towels to furniture).  Think <a href="../2010/nasty-nasty-chemical-cleaners-the-top-10-criminals/">biodegradable for all product choices</a> (detergents, bath products, cleaners, toilet paper, paper towels, etc.).  Use eco-friendly<a href="../2010/the-amazing-uses-for-baking-soda/"> baking soda</a> for everything from health &amp; beauty to cleaning your home.<a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/wp-content//spry-bttl3.jpg"><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-12500" title="spry bttl" src="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/wp-content//spry-bttl3.jpg" alt="" width="127" height="127" /></a><br />
<strong>C – <span style="text-decoration: underline;">CFLs, Cleaners, Compost, CSAs</span> </strong>– Replace your lights with <a href="../2010/the-light-goes-out-on-incandescents%E2%80%A6-hello-cfls-leds/">compact fluorescents</a>.  Skip the chemicals in traditional, commercial cleaners and opt for <a href="../2010/green-clean-one-fab-multi-purpose-cleaner-recipe/">eco-friendly choices</a>. Start composing food scraps and other biodegradable materials.  Consider buying into a <a href="../2010/grab-your-csa-and-get-fresh/">CSA</a> for the freshest, organic produce.<br />
<strong>D – <span style="text-decoration: underline;">Donate, Disposable, Dry cleaning</span></strong> – <a href="../2010/the-forgotten-%E2%80%9Cr%E2%80%9D-%E2%80%A6-aww-poor-%E2%80%9Creuse%E2%80%9D/">Donate</a> your usable but no longer needed clothing, books, toys, household items and furniture to organizations that support the less fortunate, so they can be reused.  Eliminate anything intentionally <a href="../2010/there-are-alternatives-to-ziplocs/">disposable</a> from your purchases. Look for an eco-friendly <a href="../2010/%E2%80%9Cgreen%E2%80%9D-dry-cleaning-that-won%E2%80%99t-leave-your-head-spinning/">dry cleaner</a> to avoid toxic chemicals.<br />
<strong>E – <span style="text-decoration: underline;">Energy, Environment</span></strong> – <a href="../2010/the-power-of-power-strips/">Turn off</a> electronics, computers, lights and all household appliances that aren’t in use.  Consider <strong></strong>the effect on the <a href="../global-warming-why-%E2%80%9Cone-degree%E2%80%9D-matters/">environment</a> in everything you do.<br />
<strong>F – <span style="text-decoration: underline;">Food</span></strong> – Make <a href="../2010/meat-protein-with-a-side-of-junk-food-antibiotics-anyone/">healthy choices</a> of organic and natural foods instead of those filled with preservatives, artificial ingredients and chemicals.  Help your <a href="../taste-the-rainbow-how-to-get-kids-to-eat-good-food/">kids learn to make great choices</a> too!<strong><a href="../wp-content//kids-recycl1.jpg"><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-12502" title="kids recycl" src="../wp-content//kids-recycl1.jpg" alt="" width="123" height="174" /></a></strong><br />
<strong>G – <span style="text-decoration: underline;">Global warming, Glass, Greywater</span></strong> – Accept that <a href="../is-climate-change-affecting-your-health/">global warming</a> is real and we’re the only creature on the planet that can do s<strong></strong>o<strong></strong>mething about it.  Recycle all glass (it can be recycled indefinitely!). Learn all the ways to put your <a href="../simple-conservation-tip-put-your-%E2%80%9Cgreywater%E2%80%9D-to-work%E2%80%A6/">greywater</a> to work.<strong></strong><br />
<strong>H – <span style="text-decoration: underline;">Heating, Home</span></strong> – <a href="../keeping-warm%E2%80%A6-while-staying-green/">Turn down the thermostat</a>.  Excess energy equals an excess of pollution. Make your home safe and clean, and <strong></strong>simultaneously non-toxic, by <a href="../2010/nasty-nasty-chemical-cleaners-the-top-10-criminals/">cutting out all chemicals</a>.<br />
<strong>I – <span style="text-decoration: underline;">Ideas</span></strong> –<a href="../2010/mom-goes-green%E2%80%99s-favorite-green-gifts-guide/"> Share what you know</a> and learn with others.  It can have a fabulous snowball effect!  The ideas from our <a href="../%E2%80%9Cgreen-lessons%E2%80%9D-from-our-grandparents%E2%80%A6/">grandparents</a> are excellent principals to follow as well.<br />
<strong>J – <span style="text-decoration: underline;">Journey</span></strong> – Give yourself <a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/mom-goes-green-is-three-years-old/">credit for the things you are doing</a> and accept that going green is truly a journey!<strong></strong><br />
<strong>K – <span style="text-decoration: underline;">Kids</span></strong> – <a href="../2010/10-simple-ways-to-raise-green-kids/">Get your kids involved</a>.  When they learn to respect the environment early in life, that lesson will stay with them forever.<br />
<strong>L – <span style="text-decoration: underline;">Landfills, Local</span></strong> – Remember that everything you toss in the trash <a href="../2010/toxic-water-from-landfills-is-all-around-us/">winds up in a landfill</a>, polluting the soil and water.  Buy local at every opportunity and, especially for <a href="../simple-tip-3-ways-to-get-the-%E2%80%9Cmost%E2%80%9D-out-of-your-produce/">produce</a>, get the most out of your food.<br />
<strong>M – <span style="text-decoration: underline;">Mattresses, Meat, Milk</span></strong> – When you replace a mattress, consider organic.  <a href="../do-you-know-what%E2%80%99s-on-your-new-mattress/">Traditional mattresses</a> are filled with harsh and harmful chemicals.  Choose organic meat and <a href="../2010/does-organic-milk-really-matter/">milk to avoid antibiotics, steroids and growth hormones</a>.<a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/wp-content//farmers-produce3.jpg"><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-12503" style="margin: 3px 9px;" title="farmers produce" src="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/wp-content//farmers-produce3.jpg" alt="" width="102" height="136" /></a><br />
<strong>N – <span style="text-decoration: underline;">Newspapers</span></strong> – When you need to keeps something hot or cold in transport, newspaper is an <a href="../2010/eco-unfriendly-styrofoam-coolers-give-me-the-%E2%80%9Cchills%E2%80%9D/">amazing insulator</a>.  When you’re done, recycle them, always!<br />
<strong>O – <span style="text-decoration: underline;">Organics, Outdoors, Oceans</span></strong> – Buy as many <a href="../2010-update-the-%E2%80%9Cclean-15%E2%80%9D-and-the-%E2%80%9Cdirty-dozen%E2%80%9D/">organics</a> as you can… simple as that.  <a href="../2010/%E2%80%9Cbe-out-there%E2%80%9D-the-best-things-in-life-are-free/">Getting outdoors</a> will remind you of this beautiful world we are trying to preserve, and even if you can’t see an ocean from where you live, never forget how crucial they are.  Remember that allowing them to be polluted (the <a href="../2010/welcome-to-plastic-island-the-great-pacific-garbage-patch/">Great Pacific Garbage Patch,</a> and the <a href="../86-days/">Gulf Disaster</a>) must be prevented.<br />
<strong>P – <span style="text-decoration: underline;">Plastic, Paper, Palm oil</span></strong> – Avoid the <a href="../2010/our-plastic-planet/">excessive use of plastics</a> or at least make sure the plastics are truly recyclable.  Same goes for paper.  Be conscious not to be wasteful and <a href="../2010/things-you-should-know-about-recycling-paper/">recycle every unneeded piece of paper</a> that comes your way.  Learn about<a href="../palm-oil-how-and-why-to-make-responsible-choices/"> palm oil</a> and purchase only products that use the sustainable variety.<br />
<strong>Q – <span style="text-decoration: underline;">Quit</span></strong> procrastinating and take the next step!<br />
<strong>R – <span style="text-decoration: underline;">Recycle, Reusable Bags, Rain barrels</span></strong> – NOT <a href="../reasons-to-recycle-the-facts/">recycling</a> is inexcusable.  Recyclables should never be thrown in the trash.  Invest in <a href="../%E2%80%98tis-the-season-to-remember-your-reusables/">reusable shopping bags</a> and stop contributing to the ‘one trillion plastic bags used annually, worldwide’ statistic.  Set-up at rain barrel to capture water for use around your yard.<br />
<strong>S – <span style="text-decoration: underline;">Schools, Shopping, “Shoes off</span>“</strong> – Get  <a href="../upcycle-with-terracycle%E2%80%A6-joining-the-%E2%80%9Cbrigades%E2%80%9D/">involved at your children’s schools</a> and put together programs to help them embrace recycling and the environment. Realize that every purchase you make has a greener option… it’s up to you to know the difference and choose wisely.  Adopt the <a href="../simple-health-tip-remove-those-shoes/">“shoes off” rule</a> and avoid tracking toxins and chemicals through your home.<a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/wp-content//national-parks.jpg"><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-12505" style="margin: 3px 9px;" title="national parks" src="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/wp-content//national-parks.jpg" alt="" width="111" height="111" /></a><br />
<strong>T – <span style="text-decoration: underline;">Trash, Trees, Travel</span></strong> – Make a conscious effort to <a href="../2010/the-simple-math-of-recycling/">reduce your weekly trash</a> by not buying over-packaged products or buy only products in recyclable packaging.  <a href="../2010/want-to-shorten-your-life-be-unhappy-cut-down-trees/">Don’t cut down healthy trees</a>… they are more valuable than just their visual beauty (think air quality, soil preservation, wildlife habitat… the list goes on and on). Don’t leave your green principals at home when you <a href="../another-green-ish-vacation-and-mother-earth-bonding/">travel</a>, take them with you!<br />
<strong>U – <span style="text-decoration: underline;">Un-green, Upcycle</span></strong> – When you see a “wrong”, you can make it “right”.  Speak up, help others and make a change that can make a difference.  Before you throw anything away, consider if it has a secondary use and <a href="../%E2%80%9Cunroll-your-imagination%E2%80%9D%E2%80%A6-and-win/">upcycle</a>.<br />
<strong>V – <span style="text-decoration: underline;">Vinegar, Volunteer</span></strong> – The uses for <a href="../10-more-reasons-vinegar-should-be-on-your-grocery-list/">distilled white vinegar</a> are endless.  Buy some for cleaning, cosmetic uses, deodorizing, and pest and weed control.  <a href="../2010/a-great-green-new-year%E2%80%99s-resolution/">Volunteer your time</a> for an environmental cause.<br />
<strong>W – <span style="text-decoration: underline;">Water, Water Bottles, Wildlife</span></strong> – <a href="../2010/water-aqua-h2o-you-name-it%E2%80%A6-but-just-conserve-it/">Conserve water</a>… contrary to belief, the supply is not endless.  Buy a stainless steel, reusable water bottle to avoid <a href="../bottled-water-the-bad-the-bad-and-the-badder/">BPA</a> and <a href="../2010/bottled-water-the-bad-the-bad-and-the-badder/">stop contributing plastic bottles to landfills</a>. Contribute to causes that<a href="../2010/%E2%80%9Chug%E2%80%9D-wildlife%E2%80%A6-so-we-don%E2%80%99t-kiss-it-goodbye/"> protect the habitats of wildlife</a> and consider what you are doing to <em>their</em> “home” in your every action.<br />
<strong>X – <span style="text-decoration: underline;">Xenagogue, Xeriscape</span> </strong>– The definition of xenogogue is “guide”, so simply guide others and become a steward of both your home and the earth, and make informed choices. <a href="../simple-gardening-tip-plant-native-for-a-truly-green-garden/"> Xeriscape</a> in your yard by planting only native trees, shrubbery and flowers to prevent the need for excessive watering.<a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/wp-content//martika-jo1.jpg"><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-12506" style="margin: 3px 9px;" title="martika &amp; jo" src="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/wp-content//martika-jo1.jpg" alt="" width="133" height="88" /></a><br />
<strong>Y – <span style="text-decoration: underline;">You</span> </strong>– (YOU knew that one was coming too, right?) but sincerely, the changes you make in your daily life are all up to you.  Take what you know and put it to good use.<br />
<strong>Z – <span style="text-decoration: underline;">Zoos, Zero-Waste</span></strong> – Support <a href="../2010/%E2%80%9Cdo-the-zoo%E2%80%9D-and-pay-it-forward/">zoos</a> that dedicate themselves to conservation and education.  Buy kits and containers that can be <a href="../2010/don%E2%80%99t-pack-trash-for-lunch/">reused for lunchtime</a> (or anytime) so that you don’t contribute to the approximate ‘67 pounds of annual trash created by a child’s lunch’.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/wp-content//globe_tree2.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-12507" title="globe_tree" src="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/wp-content//globe_tree2.jpg" alt="" width="81" height="109" /></a>There it is: <strong>A to Z</strong> (and I feel like I only scratched the surface!) But the main mission is to simply get started.  <em>Don’t</em> wait for tomorrow, and <em>don’t</em> expect you have to do it all at once, but <em>do</em> admit that we can all make little changes that amount to one enormous difference!</p>
<p><strong><em>HaPPy NeW YeaR</em></strong><strong> and cheers to making it (and keeping it) green!</strong></p>

<p>Sadly, our indoor air can become even more polluted than outdoor air(!) due in part to everything from <a href="../simple-tip-choose-low-or-no-voc-paint%E2%80%A6-always/"><strong>VOCs in paint</strong></a> to all of the<strong> horrible things we <a href="../simple-health-tip-remove-those-shoes/">track in on our shoes</a> and then send airborne!</strong></p>
<p>Just take a look at <strong>what some of the most common household plants can “do”</strong> for your home!:</p>

<li><strong>Areca palm</strong> – this one is the top purifier and also humidifies the air as it cleans!  (Lady palm and bamboo palm also do an amazing job!)<img class="alignright size-full wp-image-12285" title="peace lly plt" src="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/wp-content//peace-lly-plt1.jpg" alt="peace lly plt" width="139" height="170" /></li>
<li><strong>Peace lilies</strong> – also a great all-around air purifier, and incredibly easy to maintain.</li>
<li><strong>English ivy</strong> – fantastic for removing airborne mold (up to 60% of airborne mold in just six hours, by the way!).</li>
<li><strong>Spider plants</strong> – great at removing 100% of the carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide from the air in only 24 hours.</li>
<li><strong>Boston ferns</strong> – another great over-all air purifier but especially for removing formaldehyde from the air.</li>
<li><strong>Rubber plants</strong> – great for cleaning out those VOCs.</li>
</ul>
<p>To reach maximum effectiveness, it’s recommended to have <strong>at least one 6” plant per 100 feet of living space</strong>.</p>
<p>Amazing, isn’t it? Actually, it’s exactly <strong>what I would expect Mother Nature to provide</strong>… something to clean-up our dirty work (<strong>and dirty air!</strong>).</p>

</strong></p>
<p>Everything from the<strong> decorations, to the food, to the clean-up</strong> can be exceptionally green.</p>
<p><strong><em>Here are the things to keep in mind:</em></strong></p>
<ol>
<li><strong>Invitations</strong> – forgo the paper invitations and send<a href="http://new.evite.com/#home"> <strong>Evites</strong></a> instead.  You’ve probably already handled this task, but this rule goes for any gathering!  And if you do need to mail invitations, look for those made of recycled paper.</li>
<li><strong>Decorations</strong> – in many cases, you need only walk into your own backyard: leaves, acorns and twigs can be turned into amazing arrangements. Combine them with colorful gourds, Indian corn, squash and apples and you’ve just captured the season!  Afterward, compost or add them back to nature.</li>
<li> <strong>Food</strong> – visit your<strong> <a href="http://www.localharvest.org/farmers-markets/">local farmer’s market</a></strong> for all of the most amazing produce.  Go organic.  Think acorn squash, sweet potatoes, corn, green beans, apple and pumpkin pie! And seek out an organic, hormone-free, steroid-free turkey (if it will be a part of your feast).</li>
<li><strong>Drinks</strong> – serve <strong><a href="../when-a-green-mom-needs-an-organic-cocktail%E2%80%A6/">organic drinks</a></strong> or consider a local brew… or, if you’re lucky (like me!) and surrounded by local wineries, a local wine!</li>
<li> <strong>Tableware and serveware</strong> – stop saving “the good dishes” and silverware!  Use them!  Glasses, cups and stemware?  Get them out! Forget the disposable “anything”.  You can even score inexpensive cloth napkins and table coverings at any dollar store.<img class="alignright size-full wp-image-12264" title="crncopia" src="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/wp-content//crncopia2.jpg" alt="crncopia" width="191" height="152" /></li>
<li><strong>Consider the temperature </strong>– ovens heat a house quite quickly… and so do lots of people… so turn down the thermostat or, in warmer climates, keep ceiling fans circulating or windows open to keep the indoors comfortable.</li>
<li><a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/celebrate-america-recycles-day-november-15/"><strong>Recycle</strong></a> – that should go without saying, but just remember to make it happen.   Cans, jars, containers, bottles, anything and everything possible.</li>
<li><strong>Don’t waste leftovers</strong> – keep only what you know your family will eat.  Send the rest home with your guests.  Start thinking about containers now (no styrofoam plates or plastic-wrap, please!).  You can even ask guests to bring their own glass or ceramic dishware… why not?! And if you compost, toss in those food scraps.</li>
<li><strong>Clean-up</strong> – use your<a href="../skipping-steps-in-dish-washing-lots-of-conservation/"> <strong>dishwasher</strong></a>, but make sure you fill it first.  For the big jobs, you’ll need to use some elbow-grease, but be sure not to leave the tap running endlessly.   And get out your<a href="../green-clean-one-fab-multi-purpose-cleaner-recipe/"> <strong>green cleaners</strong></a>.  You can get back to “shiny &amp; clean” without harsh chemicals.</li>
<li>Although it has nothing to do with being green… <strong>give thanks.</strong> Ask everyone at your table to share a thought. It will certainly put happiness in the air, and that&#8217;s absolutely free!</li>
</ol>
<p>Now,<strong> if you need some of those ‘leaf, acorn and twig’ decorations I mentioned, email me</strong>… and then back up a truck… I have enough in my own backyard to supply your whole neighborhood!</p>

<p>You probably already know that <strong>I didn’t leave my green principals behind.</strong> We conserved, we recycled and we simply enjoyed the purity of a beautiful environment.</p>
<p>Once again, after evaluating our trip, <strong>I feel no guilt</strong>.  We were honestly <strong>conscious not to be wasteful</strong>. We made sure <strong>not to waste energy or over-consume</strong> — from turning off<a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/the-light-goes-out-on-incandescents%E2%80%A6-hello-cfls-leds/"> lights</a> to waiting for a <a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/skipping-steps-in-dish-washing-lots-of-conservation/">full dishwasher</a> — and even purchased all of our<strong> usual <a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/a-resource-for-everyone-who-loves-their-organics/">organic food</a> and earth-friendly products.<img class="alignright size-large wp-image-11951" style="margin: 3px 9px;" title="OBX JBeach" src="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/wp-content//OBX-JBeach-768x1024.jpg" alt="OBX JBeach" width="110" height="147" /></strong></p>
<p><strong>We recycled absolutely everything too.</strong> I am proud to say that, over the course of the entire vacation, we created only one small bag of trash… but the amount of <strong>recycling was certainly more substantial</strong>.  Unlike last year (when my husband<strong> <a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/another-green-ish-vacation-and-mother-earth-bonding/">delivered our recyclables to the local recycling center!</a></strong>) we were fortunate enough to discover some recycling cans right outside of our condo.  Yes, this was a relief for my husband and quite different than our<a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/umm%E2%80%A6myrtle-beach-hello/"> Myrtle Beach vacation</a> a number of years ago!</p>
<p>I also need to offer some green applause to a community that is wise enough to not only <strong>protect the natural sand dunes</strong> on the beach but also <strong>provide cans for <a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/reasons-to-recycle-the-facts/">recyclables</a></strong>.  This is a view from our condo deck.  See those two cans with the <img class="alignleft size-large wp-image-11952" style="margin: 3px 9px;" title="OBX cans" src="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/wp-content//OBX-cans1-768x1024.jpg" alt="OBX cans" width="110" height="148" />yellow lids? … yes, <strong>recycling cans</strong>.  And the one small blue can? … yep, that’s for <strong>trash</strong>.  But I think it’s very telling that there is more than twice as much capacity for recyclables than there is for trash. They acknowledge that <strong>there’s PLENTY that can be recycled</strong> and <strong>DOESN’T need to become trash</strong>.</p>
<p>The point is, no matter where we are,<strong> we CAN “tread lightly”</strong>.  At home, on vacation, in everyday life, everywhere. There’s always an option, there’s always a choice.  <strong>Make the right choice.</strong></p>

										</div><p><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-11904" style="margin: 3px 9px;" title="lamp" src="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/wp-content//lamp2.jpg" alt="lamp" width="107" height="143" />Sometimes it’s easy to get so consumed with planning and preparing for a vacation that <strong>we forget about the home we’re leaving behind.</strong></p>
<p>Before you leave, your house needs some special attention so<strong> it doesn’t continue to over-consume in your absence.</strong> When you think about everything that’s drawing energy on a daily basis (and the things that an empty house <em>doesn’t</em> need), it’s time for a checklist.</p>
<p>Here are a few simple (and possibly overlooked) ideas to <strong>keep your home green while you vacation:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Turn off your <a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/air-conditioning-vs-fresh-air-10-ways-to-%E2%80%9Ckeep-our-cool%E2%80%9D-2/">air conditioning</a></strong> or, in the winter months, <strong>turn the<a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/keeping-warm%E2%80%A6-while-staying-green/"> heat </a>to 55 degrees</strong>.</li>
<li>Make sure <strong>ceiling fans are turned off</strong>.<img class="alignright size-full wp-image-11905" style="margin: 3px 9px;" title="fridge" src="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/wp-content//fridge2.jpg" alt="fridge" width="149" height="155" /></li>
<li><a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/simple-tips-for-cutting-your-electric-bill-and-emissions/"><strong>Unplug nearly everything</strong></a>… computers, TVs, appliances, microwaves, lamps, coffee makers, all of it!  Look at every outlet in your house and most things can be unplugged in your absence.  They WILL still consume “phantom power” even when not in use!</li>
<li><strong>Install timers</strong> on a few lights so your home still appears lived-in but they won’t glow 24-hours-a-day.</li>
<li><strong>Dial down the temperature </strong>or switch off the breaker on your <strong>water heater</strong>.</li>
<li><strong>If you clear out an overload of perishables </strong>in <strong><a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/simple-refrigerator-tip-energy-efficiency-1-2-3%E2%80%A6/">your refrigerator</a> </strong>make sure it’s not too empty… you actually need some content to make it efficient.  If it’s looking a bit empty, just fill and cover a few large pitchers of water.</li>
</ul>
<p>That’s all it takes.  A checklist and a little extra time and you can<strong> keep it green while you play away!</strong></p>

<p>Well, this weekend is a <a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/the-red-white-blue-and-green-for-the-4th-of-july-2/"><strong>long holiday weekend</strong></a> for many of us.  Why not take time for YOU (for a change!)? Here are three simple ways (with relatively earth-friendly twists) to naturally rejuvenate and leave the stress behind (even if only for a night!):</p>
<ul>
<li>Go ahead and splurge – <strong>take a bath</strong> and add some <strong><a href="http://www.pristineplanet.com/eco-friendly-organic-natural/bath-salts/1216_a_0.html">natural and organic bath salts</a></strong>.       Studies show that the salts increase prolactin levels by up to a third and help in relaxation!</li>
<li><strong>Grab a cup </strong>of hot <strong><a href="http://www.groundsforchange.com/">organic coffee or tea</a></strong> – it can actually trigger psychological warmth and pleasant feelings, even after only <em>holding it</em> for 10 seconds!  For a natural antidepressant, add a nice spice… cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, you choose.</li>
<li>Turn off the TV and <strong>read</strong> – stimulating your mind actually creates happiness.  To be eco-friendly, borrow books from the library or a friend, make your purchase at a<strong> <a href="http://www.alibris.com/books?cm_sp=tabNav-_-books-_-na">used book store</a></strong> or, for the avid reader, buy a<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Kindle-Wireless-Reader-Wifi-Graphite/dp/B002Y27P3M/ref=dp_ob_title_def"> <strong>Kindle</strong></a> or <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Barnes-Noble-eBook-Reader-Black/dp/1400532620/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1309497086&amp;sr=8-2"><strong>Nook</strong></a>.</li>
</ul>
<p>There you have it… simple steps… and what it takes <strong>for a stressed Green Mom to shake the blues!</strong></p>

<p><strong>This weekend is the mother of all “picnic times!”</strong> The 4th of July picnics, parties, cookouts and celebrations will go on all weekend!  (I know they will for us!)</p>
<p>But it can also be a time of <strong>excess, waste and lots and lots of traditions that aren’t green at all</strong> and it can leave you feeling a little blue!</p>
<p>So here is my <strong><em>list of things to keep in mind</em></strong> as you celebrate:</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Cookouts</strong> – skip the charcoal &amp; lighter fluid and go for<a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/it%E2%80%99s-the-grill-battle%E2%80%A6-propane-vs-charcoal/"> <strong>propane grilling</strong></a>.  Even if you’re headed to a picnic area, you can prepare the grill items at home and bring them along.  Did you know that <strong><a href="../eco-unfriendly-styrofoam-coolers-give-me-the-%E2%80%9Cchills%E2%80%9D/">newspaper</a></strong> is a great insulator for any containers and will keep your hot foods incredibly hot!  (But remember to bring the newspaper home for recycling afterward!)</li>
<li><strong>Food </strong>– choose fresh, <strong><a href="../grab-your-csa-and-get-fresh/">locally-grown, organic produce and meats</a></strong>.       Whatever you can buy local, choose it!</li>
<li><strong>Coolers </strong>– no cheapo <strong><a href="../eco-unfriendly-styrofoam-coolers-give-me-the-%E2%80%9Cchills%E2%80%9D/">Styrofoam coolers</a></strong>… they may be convenient but they don’t last long, and after buying a few Styrofoam versions you could have actually owned a “real one” that you can use again and again and again!</li>
<li><strong>Dinnerware, flatware and serveware </strong>– if you’re at home (or even away), choose the reusables… just avoid<img class="alignright size-full wp-image-11828" style="margin: 3px 9px;" title="4th ckout" src="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/wp-content//4th-ckout1.jpg" alt="4th ckout" width="141" height="141" /> throwaway plastics and paper at all costs.  And if you are away from home scrape off the food scraps, bring home the reusables and wash ‘em!  You can even go crazy and choose some <strong><a href="../leafware-giveaway-win-tableware-from-mother-nature/">compostables</a></strong>!</li>
<li><strong>Table covering</strong> – three words:  CLOTH, not      plastic!</li>
<li><strong>Containers</strong> – three more words: <strong><a href="../there-are-alternatives-to-ziplocs/">REUSABLES</a></strong>, not throwaways!</li>
<li><strong>Beverages</strong> – whenever possible, mix up big batches of beverages (lemonade, iced tea) and have a large container of water, and use (or bring) the reusable glasses or tumblers (again, no Stryrofoam or plastic, pleeeeze!).  For those refreshing “adult beverages”, choose an <strong><a href="../when-a-green-mom-needs-an-organic-cocktail%E2%80%A6/">organic</a></strong> and/or local brew and remember to…</li>
<li><a href="../reasons-to-recycle-the-facts/"><strong>RECYCLE!</strong></a> – it goes without saying… bottles, cans, cardboard &amp; paperboard… have a recycling can or container ready to receive it all!</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Happy 4th of July!</strong> Celebrate your freedom and <strong>exercise your right to choose “green”… </strong>and add it to the red, white and blue!</p>

<p>I always knew I was long-winded but <strong>I never realized  that I would have sooo much to say</strong>… or at least not enough to keep me going for three years.</p>
<p>It might come easy for some but, for me… nope, not always!  <strong>I’m an over-thinker</strong> and oh, for pete’s sake, sometimes I really make myself a little crazy!  (In fact, I think I’m over-thinking <em>this</em> post RIGHT NOW!). <img src='http://www.momgoesgreen.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':)' class='wp-smiley' /> </p>
<p>So… let’s see.  <strong>What has been part of the Mom Goes Green journey this year?</strong> <em>(time to insert that dizzying dream visual here!)</em></p>
<p><strong>In my journey as Mom Goes Green I’ve:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Sung the praises of <a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/%E2%80%9Cgreen-lessons%E2%80%9D-from-our-grandparents%E2%80%A6/">grandparents </a>who unknowingly taught us to be green</li>
<li>Shared the love of <a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/the-amazing-uses-for-baking-soda/">baking soda</a></li>
<li>Felt heartbreak over the<a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/86-days/"> Gulf Oil Disaster</a> <img class="alignright size-full wp-image-11674" style="margin: 3px 9px;" title="green stuff" src="../wp-content//green-stuff1.jpg" alt="green stuff" width="244" height="244" /></li>
<li>Put my <a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/are-you-%E2%80%9Cgoing-green%E2%80%9D-just-to-be-a-%E2%80%9Cshow-off%E2%80%9D/">“green-ness” to the test</a></li>
<li>Turned my husband into an <a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/does-organic-food-taste-better/">“organics addict”</a></li>
<li>Urged readers to <a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/palm-oil-how-and-why-to-make-responsible-choices/">avoid destructive palm oil</a></li>
<li>Shared a fab <a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/green-clean-one-fab-multi-purpose-cleaner-recipe/">multi-purpose cleaner</a> recipe</li>
<li>Took my green message to <a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/mom-goes-green-goes-%E2%80%9Cmoney-minded-moms%E2%80%9D/">Suze Orman’s Money Minded Moms</a></li>
<li>Tipped-you-off about <a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/so-what-happens-to-your-%E2%80%9Cother%E2%80%9D-plastic-bags/">“other” plastic bags</a></li>
<li> Shared my updated <a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/the-a-to-z-guide-for-a-green-2011/">A-Z Green Guide</a></li>
<li>Contemplated the <a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/know-and-admit-when-cookware-needs-to-be-replaced/">safety of cookware</a></li>
<li>Discovered the amazing uses for <a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/peroxide-vs-bleach-the-greener-alternative/">hydrogen peroxide</a></li>
<li> Warned about<a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/toxic-mattresses-what-you-need-to-know/"> toxic mattresses and given better choices</a></li>
<li>Been honored as the <a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/i-love-being-an-eco-friendly-mom/">Top Eco-Friendly Mom</a></li>
<li>Mortified everyone with <a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/chicken-nuggets-what-are-they-anyhow/">the truth about chicken nuggets</a>!</li>
<li>Uncovered some interesting facts about <a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/more-unregulated-terms-you-should-know/">product terms and labels</a></li>
<li> ohhh, and the list goes on and on….</li>
</ul>
<p>Yes…<strong> it’s my journey</strong>.  And<strong> I love it</strong>.</p>
<p>And I have <strong>appreciated absolutely everyone who’s taken time out of their life to read Mom Goes Green</strong> and give some consideration to all the things I&#8217;ve shared.</p>
<h3 style="text-align: left;">Thank you for joining the journey.  <strong><em>With love and appreciation</em><span style="color: #008080;"> <span style="color: #91cb34;">– Mom Goes Green</span></span></strong></h3>

										</div><p><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-11635" style="margin: 3px 9px;" title="therm rising" src="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/wp-content//therm-rising1.jpg" alt="therm rising" width="156" height="117" />At the start of every summer, as the temperature rises, my husband and I seem to have the same discussion…<strong> when to turn on the air conditioning!</strong></p>
<p>This is never an easy discussion (okay! read: argument!) as this is the man who wears shorts and t-shirts around the house when it’s 19 degrees outside in the dead of winter.</p>
<p><strong>I prefer the open windows and doors</strong>, and want to breathe the fresh air.  To this my husband responds “Babe, it ceases to be fresh as soon as it’s 85 degrees with 70% humidity!”  Well, it’s still fresh but I guess it does cease to be RE-freshing!</p>
<p>Just like <a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/keeping-warm%E2%80%A6-while-staying-green/"><strong>heating your house in the winter</strong></a> and whether you do or don’t choose to crank the AC, there are ways to keep your house cooler, stop some of the cool air loss and use less energy in the process:</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Close <a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/simple-tip-aluminum-blinds-are-wise-window-treatments/">blinds</a></strong><strong> or curtains</strong> in various windows throughout the day to prevent the sun shining in.  If it’s coming in, so is the heat.</li>
<li><strong>Use ceiling fans</strong>. They circulate the cool air and don’t use a lot of energy.</li>
<li><strong>Program your thermostat</strong>.  No need to keep it blasting in the evening or when you aren’t even home.</li>
<li>When it’s <strong>cool outside at night</strong>, shut off the air, open the windows and take advantage.</li>
<li><strong>74 degrees is all you need</strong>.  This is a bearable temperature, and if you can tolerate it higher, do it!  Each degree saves 3-4% on your cooling/energy expenses.</li>
<li><strong>Don’t worry about unused rooms</strong>.  Close the windows, doors and vents in these rooms, and block the bottom of the door if they aren’t frequently occupied.<img class="alignright size-full wp-image-11636" style="margin: 3px 9px;" title="ceil fan" src="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/wp-content//ceil-fan1.jpg" alt="ceil fan" width="144" height="144" /></li>
<li><strong>Run appliances at night</strong>.  This includes <a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/10-ways-to-green-your-laundry%E2%80%A6-without-a-random-sock/"><strong>dryers</strong></a> &amp; <strong><a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/skipping-steps-in-dish-washing-lots-of-conservation/">dishwashers</a></strong> that give off heat. Avoid using your oven… give it a rest and<a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/it%E2%80%99s-the-grill-battle%E2%80%A6-propane-vs-charcoal/"><strong> grill instead</strong></a>!  And if you do use the stovetop, be sure to use the exhaust fan to take away the heat.</li>
<li><strong>Turn off unneeded<a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/simple-tips-for-cutting-your-electric-bill-and-emissions/"> </a><a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/simple-tips-for-cutting-your-electric-bill-and-emissions/">lights, TVs, computers</a>,</strong> etc. when you aren’t      using them.  They all generate heat too.</li>
<li>Keep heat generating <strong>appliances away from the thermostat</strong> (TVs, lamps, etc.).  They’ll make the thermostat think it’s hotter than it really is.</li>
<li><strong>Don’t <a href="../want-to-shorten-your-life-be-unhappy-cut-down-trees/">chop down trees</a></strong> that shade your house.       They simply keep a house cooler.  And even plant strategically.       Shaded AC units run more efficiently, but just be sure not to block the airflow.</li>
</ul>
<p>I <strong><em>do</em></strong> try to take my own advice.  It’s not always easy (living with my husband who compensates by turning up the ceiling fans to “jet speed”) but<strong> it’s a compromise we always seem to manage</strong> when it all “boils down”!</p>

										</div><p><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-11418" style="margin: 3px 9px;" title="toxc" src="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/wp-content//toxc3.jpg" alt="toxc" width="138" height="103" />When making the decision to “go green” <strong>the list of “should nots” is equally as important as the “shoulds”… </strong></p>
<p>I’ve posted this list before, but with the amount of questions I’ve been getting recently, it’s worthy of a refresher course.  This list originally came from <a href="http://healthychild.org/main/"><strong>Healthy Child Healthy World</strong> </a>and includes the top 10 toxic products that you DON’T need in your home. Without further ado, start checking the checklist!:</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Air fresheners </strong>– they’re full of chemicals, synthetic fragrances and even anesthetics that can be inhaled into our lungs! (All you really need is some essential oils &amp; water in a sprayer bottle!)</li>
<li><a href="../bottled-water-the-bad-the-bad-and-the-badder/"><strong>Bottled water</strong></a> – this water is no less contaminated (and sometimes MORE contaminated) than your tap water… add the BPA content of the plastic bottles and they are simply bad news. (<a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/a-green-birthday-party-favor-that-leaves-the-plastic-behind/">Reusable stainless steel bottles </a>are the only choice.)<img class="alignright size-full wp-image-11420" title="plastic bottle" src="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/wp-content//plastic-bottle2.jpg" alt="plastic bottle" width="104" height="155" /></li>
<li><strong>Canned goods</strong> – their epoxy resin linings often contain BPA, linked to hormone disruption, heart disease and obesity. (Buy fresh, <a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/2010-update-the-%E2%80%9Cclean-15%E2%80%9D-and-the-%E2%80%9Cdirty-dozen%E2%80%9D/">organic</a> and/or join a <a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/it%E2%80%99s-not-too-soon-to-think-%E2%80%9Csummer-csa%E2%80%9D/">CSA</a>.)</li>
<li><strong>Couch cushions</strong> – avoid anything containing foam that says it meets California TB 117 because they contain toxic fire retardants (like those horrible mattresses!  Remember, there <a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/toxic-mattresses-what-you-need-to-know/">ARE better choices</a>.)       Those chemicals are linked to cancer, birth defects, and thyroid, reproductive and neurological disorders.</li>
<li><strong>Drain, oven and toilet bowl <a href="../nasty-nasty-chemical-cleaners-the-top-10-criminals/">cleaners</a></strong> – they contain lye and acids that can burn skins, eyes and internal tissues. (A <a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/green-clean-one-fab-multi-purpose-cleaner-recipe/">homemade cleaner</a> of vinegar and a few simple ingredients can do the job just as well.)</li>
<li><a href="../%E2%80%9Cgreen%E2%80%9D-dry-cleaning-that-won%E2%80%99t-leave-your-head-spinning/"><strong>Dry cleaned clothes</strong></a> – even though the chemical perchloroethylene (or perc) is applied elsewhere, it is linked to a number of cancers and even bringing home those clothes (and wearing them!) dramatically increases your exposure. (Choose a “green” dry cleaner or simply avoid “dry clean only” clothing.)</li>
<li><strong>Oil-based paints and finishes</strong> – they can contain up to 300 toxic chemicals and 150      carcinogens … enough said. (Okay… a few more words: choose <a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/simple-tip-choose-low-or-no-voc-paint%E2%80%A6-always/">no-VOC paints      and finishes</a> only.)<img class="alignright size-full wp-image-11421" style="margin: 3px 9px;" title="pain't cns" src="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/wp-content//paint-cns1.jpg" alt="pain't cns" width="120" height="93" /></li>
<li><strong>Perfume and cologne</strong> – one formulation can contain literally hundreds of chemicals that can absorb through the skin and accumulate in the bodies. (Again, just an essential oil is fantastic!)</li>
<li><strong>Pesticides</strong> – these chemical poisons linger and contaminate the air and undoubtedly get <a href="../simple-health-tip-remove-those-shoes/">dragged into our homes</a>. (Take off those shoes in your house!)</li>
<li><strong>Rubber duckies!</strong> – okay, more than rubber duckies… ANYTHING that contains PVC or vinyl.  They can leach phthalates (linked to hormone distruption) and lead (a potent neurotoxicant).</li>
</ul>
<p>Please check out Healthy Child Healthy World’s <strong><a href="http://healthychild.org/blog/comments/the_top_10_toxic_products_you_dont_need/">original post</a></strong> for more great information on all of these “toxic 10”, as well as other important suggestions for substituting better options…</p>
<p>So, <strong>how many are still in or around your home?…</strong> I’ll bet you’re about to change that, aren’t you?!?</p>
