<p><strong></strong><strong>You got it, baby!&#8230; </strong>this one is for baby (and peace of mind for mommy and daddy too!)</p>
<p>It’s been a few years since either of my babies were <em>actually</em> babies but I certainly <strong>still take extra care in making sure their bath and body products meet my standards!</strong> You would be shocked (SHOCKED!) to know what’s contained in some of the better-known commercial products too.  Quite honestly, it’s awful…</p>
<p>But, not these products, my friends!  <a href="http://madrelabs.com/baby-care"><strong>Mild by Nature</strong></a> has a fantastic line of <strong><a href="http://madrelabs.com/baby-care/shampoo-a-body-wash">Shampoo &amp; Body Washes</a>, <a href="http://madrelabs.com/baby-care/hair-conditioner">Hair Conditioner</a>, Everyday Lotion</strong> (<a href="http://madrelabs.com/baby-care/everyday-lotion">scented</a> and <a href="http://madrelabs.com/baby-care/everyday-lotion-unscented">unscented</a>), <a href="http://madrelabs.com/baby-care/bubble-bath"><strong>Bubble Bath</strong></a> and<strong> <a href="http://madrelabs.com/baby-care/bitty-bottom-cream">Bitty Bottom Cream</a></strong>. They literally take care of your baby from head to toe.  Okay, truth be told, <strong>they’re great for anyone</strong>, including my  6- and 9-year old “babies” and I’m considering arm-wrestling one (or both) of them for the Everyday Lotion!<img class="alignright size-full wp-image-12096" style="margin: 5px 9px;" title="mbn prod" src="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/wp-content//mbn-prod.jpg" alt="mbn prod" width="231" height="146" /></p>
<p>The great thing about these products is their <strong>on-going  commitment to using only the best ingredients</strong>.  They like to say that their products contain <strong><a href="http://madrelabs.com/baby-care">NO “No-No’s”</a>:</strong> No sulfates, parabens, dyes, animal testing or animal ingredients.  They <strong>DO </strong>contain <strong>natural and naturally-derived ingredients</strong> including beneficial oils and extracts that smell amazing.   I especially like that they cross-reference <a href="http://madrelabs.com/quality">information and data</a> about all of their ingredients to make sure they give us only the very best products.  Impressive, right?&#8230;</p>
<p>… and <strong>you want to try them out, don’t you?</strong> How about one of each product then… just <strong>leave a comment here</strong> saying who you’d like to win these for (you CAN say yourself!), or <strong>send a Twitter message</strong> that includes a reply to <strong>@momgoesgreen</strong> and a link to this blog. <strong>Facebook friends can also leave a comment</strong> to be entered. The winner will be randomly selected on October 18! (U.S. entries only… sorry.)</p>
<p>So <strong>there you have it, baby</strong>… another chance to win!</p>

<p>Sometimes, however, <strong>there <em>are</em> items that just don’t fit the guidelines:</strong> plastic containers that your community won’t accept, polystyrene trays and <a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/eggs-and-all-the-confusing-terms-that-go-with-them%E2%80%A6/">egg</a> cartons that can’t be recycled, <a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/kid-cups-in-restaurants%E2%80%A6-disposables-really/">kids cups from restaurants</a> or just that miscellaneous something-or-other that is destine for the trash.</p>

<p>But school time is looming and it’s time to prepare. So, <strong>while you’re prepping your list</strong> (the <em>long </em>list!) of everything they need, <strong>keep these tidbits in mind</strong> to help keep it on the green side:</p>
<ul>
<li><strong><span style="color: #000000;">Check your “stock”</span> </strong>– you may already have supplies at home; some may even be leftover from last year, so check carefully before you buy.</li>
<li><span style="color: #008000;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Look for recycled content</strong></span> </span>– notebooks, <strong><a href="../simple-green-tip-ditch-your-disposable-pen-habit/">pens</a></strong>, pencils, folders, binders and even backpacks… there are lots of options out there made from recycled content, so be wise when you choose. Also, choose paper, paperboard or canvas over plastics.</li>
<li><span style="color: #008000;"><strong><span style="color: #000000;">Waste-free lunches</span> </strong></span>– plan to pack your kids’ lunches      with reusable lunch kits like those from <strong><a href="http://www.kidskonserve.com/">Kid</a></strong><a href="http://www.kidskonserve.com/"><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-11981" style="margin: 3px 9px;" title="citiznpp kit" src="../wp-content//citiznpp-kit2.jpg" alt="citiznpp kit" width="129" height="129" /></a><strong><a href="http://www.kidskonserve.com/">s Konserve</a></strong> or <strong><a href="http://www.citizenpip.com/">Citizen      Pip</a></strong>.  Also, opt for <a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/reusable-isnt-just-for-shopping-bags-anymore%E2%80%A6/"><strong>reusable containers, bottles</strong></a>, real      silverware and cloth napkins over anything single-use or disposable, and      make sure everything is BPA-free.</li>
<li><strong><span style="color: #000000;">Backpacks and totes</span> </strong>– as exciting as it seems to purchase new every year, convince your kids that if it’s still functional, it’s still usable.  If you can, also steer them away from something “character” based, so when they outgrow the character you don’t feel forced into a replacement. And when you do need to replace one, consider <strong><a href="../the-forgotten-%E2%80%9Cr%E2%80%9D-%E2%80%A6-aww-poor-%E2%80%9Creuse%E2%80%9D/">donating</a></strong> the outgrown version and make sure the new one is PVC-free.</li>
<li><span style="color: #008000;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Clothes</strong></span> </span>– we all know how quickly kids grow, but the bigger they get the slower they grow.  Take a little time for a “try-on” session.  If it’s not outgrown, no need to replace it just yet.  When it no longer fits, be sure to<strong> <a href="../the-forgotten-%E2%80%9Cr%E2%80%9D-%E2%80%A6-aww-poor-%E2%80%9Creuse%E2%80%9D/">donate everything to organizations</a></strong> that provide clothing to those in need.  Even <strong><a href="../recycling-a-wardrobe-purge-donate-swap-sell/">consignment shops and sales or swaps</a></strong> are great resources for giving or getting items that still have usefulness.</li>
</ul>
<p><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-11982" style="margin: 3px 9px;" title="schoolbus" src="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/wp-content//schoolbus2.jpg" alt="schoolbus" width="93" height="93" />Whether you get teary-eyed at the idea of sending your kids back to school, or the first day couldn’t come soon enough (<em>I&#8217;ll be a teary-eyed one!</em>) <strong>be sure to earn a “green star” for your efforts before they go!</strong></p>

<p>This <strong>Saturday, June 25</strong>, is the <strong><a href="http://online.nwf.org/site/PageNavigator/gabc_2010_home">Great American Backyard Campout</a></strong>!</p>
<p>The National Wildlife Federation created this day to <strong>encourage families to reconnect with nature and the outdoors</strong>, and remind us that we can manage life “with a little less”.  You can set up tents, cookout over a fire pit, explore your surroundings, play flashlight tag, star gaze and our kids’ ever-favorite… gorge on S’mores!  Shut down all the lights, computers and TVs in your house and even save a little electricity while you’re at it. (Indoor latrine, via flashlight, permitted of course!)<img class="alignright size-full wp-image-11800" style="margin: 3px 9px;" title="camp at home" src="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/wp-content//camp-at-home2.jpg" alt="camp at home" width="133" height="133" /></p>
<p>If you want to <a href="http://online.nwf.org/site/PageNavigator/gabc_details_find">find out who’s camping nearby</a>, or <a href="http://online.nwf.org/site/TR/GABC/gabc2010_internal?fr_id=1030&amp;pg=entry">register your own outing</a>, check out <strong><a href="http://www.nwf.org/Get-Outside/Be-Out-There.aspx">NWFs site</a></strong> for more information.</p>
<p>I think this is a great opportunity to join families all over the country in embracing everything the great outdoors has to offer<strong>… it’s free, it’s fun… </strong>it’s the perfect way to reconnect with our families and nature.  Now grab your sleeping bag and let’s campout!…</p>

<p>We know the concern with sunscreen is <strong>the presence of some nasty chemicals </strong>(that part certainly doesn&#8217;t change) but, like our ever changing lives, products get changed too and I would be remiss if I didn&#8217;t share the latest findings with you&#8230;</p>
<p>So here&#8230; without further ado is <em>THE</em> latest listing: <a href="http://breakingnews.ewg.org/2011sunscreen/?inlist=Y&amp;utm_source=2011sunscreenfull&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_content=first-link&amp;utm_campaign=toxics"><strong>EWG&#8217;s 2011 List of Suncreens</strong></a>!  Maybe you want to head right over to their <a href="http://breakingnews.ewg.org/2011sunscreen/best-sunscreens/best-beach-sport-sunscreens/"><strong>Best Suncreens</strong></a> list&#8230; and hope that what you&#8217;ve been using didn&#8217;t make their <a href="http://breakingnews.ewg.org/2011sunscreen/hall-of-shame-whats-wrong-with-the-sunscreen-protection-business/"><strong>Hall of Shame</strong></a>!</p>
<p>Now, back to our regularly scheduled program&#8230; get your <em>BEST</em> suncreen and <strong>GO PLAY!</strong></p>

										</div><p><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-11507" style="margin: 3px 9px;" title="sunshn" src="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/wp-content//sunshn1.jpg" alt="sunshn" width="189" height="126" />(Okay, Mom Goes Green is BACK from my little Mother’s Day hiatus, so…)<strong> I’m now thinking summer! </strong>The kids have started the countdown to the final days of school and we’re ALL thinking summer fun, the pool, beach vacations and lots of outdoor time!</p>
<p>But every parent knows that fun-in-the-sun also means extra precautions to make sure our precious ones (ourselves included!) don’t get fried during “the fun part”, so <strong>sunscreen is sure to be a purchase in the very near future.</strong></p>
<p>The concern with sunscreen is <strong>the presence of some nasty chemicals</strong> that we really don’t want to apply to our bodies daily, or even “frequently” for that matter (since they absorb into our skin and accumulate). Many are believed to cause hormone disruption, cell damage and allergies, amongst other things. They include <strong>vitamin A </strong>(retinyl palmitate)<strong>, Oxybenzone, Zinc Oxide, Titanium Dioxide, Mexoryl, Avobenzone… </strong>augh!… just a bunch of things that we could really do without!</p>
<p>So instead of laboring over labels and trying (sometimes in vane) to decipher the ingredients… (drumroll, please….)  <strong><a href="http://www.ewg.org/">Environmental Working Group</a></strong> has a <strong><a href="http://www.ewg.org/2010sunscreen/">list and rating of over 500 sunscreen products</a></strong>.  Believe me, it is much easier to find one on <strong><a href="http://www.ewg.org/2010sunscreen/best-beach-sport-sunscreens/">the “best” list</a></strong> and just know you have a good product to keep you safe from the sun AND the nasty chemicals.<img class="alignright size-full wp-image-11508" style="margin: 3px 9px;" title="sunscrn" src="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/wp-content//sunscrn1.jpg" alt="sunscrn" width="115" height="175" /></p>
<p>You can also <strong><a href="http://www.ewg.org/2010sunscreen/finding-the-best-sunscreens/">look-up the products you have been using</a></strong> to see how they rate.</p>
<p>Last year (via this list!) I discovered a great product: <strong><a href="http://www.bullfrogsunblock.com/"> </a></strong><strong><a href="http://www.crownlaboratories.com/bluelizard/">Blue Lizard</a></strong>.  It was fantastic and we didn’t have a burn in the bunch (or exposure to nasty chemicals!).  Fortunately, EWG has done most of the work for us, so the answers are just a few clicks away.</p>
<p>(Boy, I sure have come a long way from those teen-days when my friends and I <strong>applied baby oil(!) </strong>in HOPE of sizzling and frying!&#8230; <em><strong>WHAT</strong></em> were we thinking?!?)</p>
<p>Now check it out, buy some, <strong>slather on the good stuff and GO PLAY… </strong>summer is almost here!</p>

										</div><p style="text-align: left;"><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-11442" style="margin: 3px 9px;" title="chix nug" src="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/wp-content//chix-nug.jpg" alt="chix nug" width="139" height="92" /><strong>The idea of chicken nuggets turns my stomach.</strong> I know they have (somehow) become a staple of American kids’ diets, but for my entire life, I have found them disgusting.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Recently there has been a bunch of hub-bub about <strong>what’s really in those chicken nuggets</strong>… and patties too (and I really wonder if they are worth of having “chicken” in the name at all!).</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">My kids, like me, consider them fairly gross.  <strong>Have you SEEN this photo? </strong> Yes, that pink stuff right there (that looks like strawberry soft-serve ice cream) IS the stuff those nuggets are made of.<img class="alignright size-full wp-image-11441" style="margin: 9px;" title="chix nuggs" src="../wp-content//chix-nuggs.jpg" alt="chix nuggs" width="177" height="133" /></p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><em><strong>Want to know what’s in them?</strong></em> It’s called “<strong>mechanically separated chicken</strong>”.  A machine actually removes all of the disgusting leftovers after the quality parts are removed… it removes the <strong>tendons, tissue, cartilage, organs, and other chicken extras,</strong> and grinds them into a fine poultry paste. An <strong>ammonia wash</strong> is used to kill the bacteria and, because it looks (and now tastes!) horrible, <strong>artificial colors and flavors</strong> need to be added to make them edible.  In reality, with all of the other additives, <strong>only about 50% is even some chicken “part”</strong>… and that doesn’t even get into the nutritional side of the story. The <strong>sodium and fat</strong> content is appalling.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><strong>I tried to show this to my kids</strong> and my daughter said, emphatically,<strong> “No&#8230; Mom! I can’t watch!”</strong> If you want your kids to break-the-habit, try to get them to<strong> take a look</strong>. (I actually have two videos&#8230; <strong><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XKSoiDtdi9s">this one</a></strong> shows the kids rejecting the nuggets, but I will warn you&#8230; the embedded video <strong><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FEMbWn6ClxM">below</a> </strong>shows kids STILL willing to eat the grossness they saw&#8230; a testament to how we&#8217;ve allowed this &#8220;food item&#8221; to become acceptable!)</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="409" height="333" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube-nocookie.com/v/FEMbWn6ClxM?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US&amp;rel=0" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="409" height="333" src="http://www.youtube-nocookie.com/v/FEMbWn6ClxM?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US&amp;rel=0" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object></p>
<p style="text-align: center;">
<p style="text-align: left;">Just like any other food item, not all chicken nuggets and patties are created equal.  There are some semi-decent products out there but, buyer beware. <strong>If it says “mechanically separated chicken” on the package, throw the box and RUN!</strong> … because that icky pink stuff is what you’re buying.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Instead, <a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/reusable-isnt-just-for-shopping-bags-anymore%E2%80%A6/"><strong>pack up some healthy food</strong></a> (in reusable containers!) when you’re on the go… or <a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/taste-the-rainbow-how-to-get-kids-to-eat-good-food/"><strong>serve up a rainbow of healthy foods in a muffin pan</strong></a> when you’re at home.  Just reconsider chicken nuggets.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Truly,<strong> there are so many better, healthier, nutritious options</strong>&#8230; chicken nuggets are not <em><strong>really</strong></em> chicken nuggets. <strong><br />
</strong></p>

										</div><p><img class="alignleft size-large wp-image-11205" style="margin: 3px 9px;" title="mattress fill" src="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/wp-content//mattress-fill2-1024x682.jpg" alt="mattress fill" width="158" height="105" />It has long been a mission of mine to tell readers of dangers in products that we don’t typically consider potentially harmful.  <strong>Mattresses</strong> happen to be one of those products.</p>
<p><em>The reason?</em></p>
<p>Beginning<strong> July 1, 2007,<span style="color: #800080;"> Federal Fire Retardant Regulations</span> </strong>mandated mattress manufacturers to<strong> INCREASE their levels of toxic fire retardants, </strong>but<strong> DO NOT require them to list the chemical ingredients</strong> in the contents of the mattresses!</p>
<p>And what do these fire retardants contain?… <em><span style="color: #800080;"><strong>boric acid, melamine, antimony and formaldehyde</strong></span></em>… all chemicals linked to <strong>cancer</strong>.  Antimony alone causes heart muscle damage and (as much as I dislike testing on animals) a single dermal application has been fatal to laboratory animals.  Additional tests on Memory Foam mattresses even detected <strong>61 chemical emissions and off-gassing from a single mattress</strong>.  Think about how many hours you spend sleeping on your mattress… every… single… night.  All the while, you are <strong>inhaling these toxic off-gassing chemicals</strong>. I find it both frightening AND infuriating, especially where our children are concerned.<img class="alignright size-full wp-image-11206" style="margin: 9px;" title="Nat bed matt" src="../wp-content//Nat-bed-matt.jpg" alt="Nat bed matt" width="199" height="118" /></p>
<p>The ONLY answer is <strong>an organic mattress</strong>.  They’re made of <strong>pure organic wool, 100% organic cotton co</strong><strong>v</strong><strong>ers </strong>and<strong> </strong><strong>100% natural latex cores, </strong>providing even<strong> BETTER fire retardancy </strong>than the chemicals…<strong> <span style="color: #008000;">naturally</span>!</strong> The reality is that <strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">m</span><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">attresses </span><span style="text-decoration: underline;">do NOT need to be sprayed with chemicals</span> </strong></strong>to make them fire retardant; they need to<strong> </strong>meet standards for <strong>BEING</strong> fire retardant… and that’s exactly what you get with organic mattresses.  They are chemical-free AND fire retardant!</p>
<p>When we purchased a new mattress for our son, we chose an organic mattress from <a href="http://naturalbedco.com/"><strong>Natural Bed Co</strong></a>.  They’re the real deal… <strong>helpful, reliable and honest</strong> (unlike some <a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/more-toxic-mattress-%E2%80%9Clies%E2%80%9D-that-boil-my-blood/">other mattress companies</a> our friends have had to deal with!).</p>
<p>If you’re in Northeast Ohio, you can visit their showroom but, luckily for everyone,<strong> they’ll ship nationwide!</strong> They have literally everything you could need for restful, peaceful sleep, <strong>WITHOUT harsh and harmful chemicals</strong> sprayed all over your mattress.</p>
<p><a href="http://naturalbedco.com/"><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-11207" style="margin: 3px 9px;" title="Nat bed logo" src="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/wp-content//Nat-bed-logo.jpg" alt="Nat bed logo" width="276" height="71" /></a>I truly suggest you <strong>bookmark this post</strong> for when you’re in the market for a new mattress and/or bedding.  But I believe in <strong><a href="http://naturalbedco.com/">Natural Bed Co.</a></strong> so much, there is also a <strong>clickable link in my sidebar</strong> that has taken permanent residence.  Click and take a look&#8230; they have exactly what you need.</p>
<p>And by the way, you might be asking yourself<strong> if they’re affordable</strong>… well, I assure you, <strong>they are</strong>.  And afterall, considering all of the hours you and your family spend sleeping on your mattresses, can you really<em><strong> afford</strong></em> anything except <strong>the safest (and healthiest) choice?</strong></p>
