											</iframe>
										</div><p><a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/wp-content//PLU1.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-12546" style="margin: 3px 9px;" title="PLU" src="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/wp-content//PLU1.jpg" alt="" width="132" height="100" /></a>About a year ago I ran a post about PLUs.  These are the numbers listed on the<strong> little stickers of the produce</strong> we purchase.  Did you remember that <strong>PLUs</strong> (“Product {<em>or Price</em>} Look-Up” labels) <strong><em>actually mean something?</em></strong>… they aren’t just random numbers.</p>
<p>I have them in long-term memory but I was reminded about them during my recent grocery store trip when I realized (while standing in line, of course!) that I had forgotten to purchase tomatoes.  I asked my 10-year old to run back to the produce section and bring back three tomatoes.  I did, however, forget to be specific… ugh-oh.  Well, lo and behold, she returned with three lovely tomatoes and said “Don’t worry… they’re 9 Mom!”  Yes, she remembered!</p>
<p>So, it’s a good time for a reminder:  the important number is actually <strong>the first digit</strong> and they can tell you a whole lot about the produce you purchase.  It tells you exactly <strong><em>how</em> it was grown</strong>.</p>
<p>Here are <strong>the digits</strong> you need to remember (with an update from my past post) :<a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/wp-content//PLU31.jpg"><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-12547" title="PLU3" src="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/wp-content//PLU31.jpg" alt="" width="200" height="146" /></a></p>
<ul>
<li><strong>3 or 4</strong> – indicates <strong>conventionally grown</strong> produce (grown with pesticides, herbicides &amp; fertilizers)</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><strong>8</strong> – originally I had indicated that this identifies <a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/do-you-really-know-what-you%E2%80%99re-eating/"><strong>genetically-modified</strong></a> (GMO) or <strong>genetically-engineered </strong>(GE) produce but more evidence is showing that this may not be so and there is no true designation for GMO.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><strong>9</strong> – indicates that the produce is <a href="../2010-update-the-%E2%80%9Cclean-15%E2%80%9D-and-the-%E2%80%9Cdirty-dozen%E2%80%9D/"><strong>ORGANIC</strong></a></li>
</ul>
<p>The next time you pick up a piece of produce: <em>(1)</em> <strong>look</strong> at the first digit of the PLU label,<em> (2)</em> <strong>remember</strong> these numbers, <em>(3)</em> <strong>know</strong> what you’re buying and then <em>(4)</em> <strong>rest assured</strong> that they’ll tell you more about the food you’re buying <em>for</em> (and serving <em>to</em>) your family.  And, even when you don’t expect it, your kids may catch on too!</p>

<p>I have already given you the list of <a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/mggs-last-minute-guide-to-keeping-your-holidays-%E2%80%9Cgreen%E2%80%9D/"><strong>Mom Goes Green holiday recommendations</strong></a>, from gifts to party planning, so I hope you’ve already discovered some great ideas and tips.</p>
<p>I also realized that there is one VERY important organization that I didn’t mention loudly enough: <a href="http://www.kiva.org/"><strong>Kiva!</strong></a></p>
<p><a href="http://www.kiva.org/"><strong>Kiva</strong></a> is really quite extraordinary… through their gift certificate program you can <strong>“loan” your gifted money to a “working poor” recipient </strong>of your choosing.  Once they are able to repay the loan, you are given back your donated money to grant to another needy recipient… and this wonderful cycle starts all over again!</p>
<p><strong>We’ve personally supported many families. </strong>They’ve including a man in Tajikistan who desperately needed money to buy seeds for farming, to a gentleman in Palestine that needed funds to improve his organic chicken farm! It’s rewarding (and admittedly fun!) to go through the list of people, see who you would like to help and check on their progress as time goes on, and until their loan is repaid.<a href="../wp-content//Kiva-holiday1.png"><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-12431" style="margin: 3px 9px;" title="Kiva holiday" src="../wp-content//Kiva-holiday1.png" alt="" width="170" height="84" /></a></p>
<p><strong>Consider giving a<a href="http://www.kiva.org/gifts"> Kiva gift certificate</a> to someone</strong> (or make a donation yourself) and just a small amount will allow them (or you!) to give again and again and again…</p>
<p><strong>Isn’t that really much better than that lousy sweater you were considering?…</strong></p>

<p><strong>There are plenty of ways to avoid the excess and waste of the season, as well as making gifts selections that are fabulously green and giving</strong>.  So that we (okay, so that <em>I</em>) don’t waste any more time getting to it, let’s just throw it on the table and get it <em>all</em> out of the way!</p>
<p><strong>Here are my four must-read posts that will help you through</strong> (click below and read on!):</p>
<ul>
<li><a href="../mom-goes-green%E2%80%99s-favorite-green-gifts-guide/"><strong>My favorite gifts guide</strong></a> – a list of all the tangible gifts that I enjoy giving, because they happen to be great gifts and they are also fabulously green ideas too.</li>
<li><a href="../green-gift-guide-ii-gifts-that-give-back/"><strong>My favorite gifts that “give back”</strong></a>: – a list of gifts that give to a worthwhile cause:  wildlife, nature or the environment.  Sometimes we don’t need to give those tangible gifts that clutter the recipient’s home… giving to a cause in the recipient’s honor may be the biggest present of all!</li>
<li><a href="../%E2%80%9Cit%E2%80%99s-my-party-and-%E2%80%98we%E2%80%99ll-go-green%E2%80%99-if-i-want-to%E2%80%9D/"><strong>Green party planning</strong></a> – a list of all the ways you can keep your holiday soiree goin’ green.  From decorations, to your menu choices, to your clean-up… there are simple ways to keep from abandoning all of your green principals!<a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/wp-content//gift-w-cones2.jpg"><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-12417" style="margin: 3px 9px;" title="gift w cones" src="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/wp-content//gift-w-cones2.jpg" alt="" width="118" height="132" /></a></li>
<li><a href="../wrappin%E2%80%99-reminder-keepin%E2%80%99-it-green/"><strong>Wrap it up in a big “green” bow</strong></a> – a list of all the ways those tangible gifts can be given without creating mountains of trash.</li>
</ul>
<p>Hopefully, <strong>this guide will help you along the way</strong>, and gifts that you give will be useful, practical and, sometimes, just simply serve a cause.</p>
<p>The clock may be ticking, but there is <strong>always <em>time</em> to make great choices.</strong></p>
<p><em><strong>Happy green holidays, my friends!</strong></em></p>

<p>If you haven’t heard the buzz:  “A <strong><a href="http://uanews.org/pdfs/GerbaWilliamsSinclair_BagContamination.pdf">study</a></strong> from the University of Arizona and Loma Linda University in California found that <strong>most people who bring their own bags to the grocery store don’t wash or clean them regularly</strong> – and the researchers also discovered a large number of bacteria present in the reusable bags.”  Take a look at the study but you can also read more about the topic at <a href="http://earth911.com/news/2011/10/21/germs-in-reusable-bags-should-you-worry/"><strong>Earth 911</strong></a>.</p>
<p>Admittedly, I’m not a frequent-reusable-bag-washer either. But<strong> I do have a fairly simple plan for combatting these cooties!</strong>  First of all, I have <strong>a set of bags dedicated to grocery shopping</strong>.  I tied a red ribbon on the handle of the bag meant for only meat products.  On the handle of the produce-dedicated bag, you guested it… a green ribbon.  It’s easy to just let the cashier know where you need your items placed (sure, sometimes they aren’t thrilled, but oh well!).</p>
<p>I have a whole<strong> second set of bags especially for all of my non-grocery purchases</strong>.  That absolutely eliminates the concern since there isn’t anything that goes inside to cause the contamination.<a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/wp-content//reusable-food-tote1.jpg"><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-12359" title="reusable food tote" src="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/wp-content//reusable-food-tote1.jpg" alt="" width="125" height="139" /></a></p>
<p>If this still leaves you a bit unsettled, well, <strong>there’s another simple way to ease your mind…</strong> (hold onto your hats!)&#8230; <strong>wash… your… bags. <img src='http://www.momgoesgreen.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':)' class='wp-smiley' />  </strong></p>
<p>And in all reality, even the EPA admits that <strong>most of the bacteria doesn’t even pose a health threat</strong>.  Afterall, there’s more bacteria on the handle of the gas pump you just used to fill-up your car!</p>
<p>So, my green friends, <strong>do NOT be deterred</strong>.  Reusable bags are, and always will be, the way to go. (The<a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/plastic-bags-animals-heartbreak/"> harm plastic bags create</a> is much greater!)  Just periodically <strong>let them go for a little swim in your washing machine</strong> and, I promise you, all will be well.</p>

										</div><p style="text-align: left;">Black Friday…<strong> I NEVER shop Black Friday!</strong> Instead, I celebrate<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buy_Nothing_Day"> “<strong>Buy Nothing Day</strong>“</a>.  Every year.  Period.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Yeeeeess, I know… the bargains, the excitement, the tradition… <strong>I simply choose to spend the day NOT spending</strong>.  It’s a great reminder that we don’t need to spend obscene amounts of money, rise in the wee hours of the morning and push &amp; shove our way to<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z4QojXyegfs&amp;feature=related"> luxury items that aren’t even needed</a>, if we really think about it.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">First, let’s support “Buy Nothing Day” with a little <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PK_4pHIr4eQ">&#8220;farewell-to-excess-spending&#8221; tribute</a>:</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="420" height="315" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/PK_4pHIr4eQ?version=3&amp;hl=en_US" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/PK_4pHIr4eQ?version=3&amp;hl=en_US" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Next, I want to tell you what I AM supporting this year.  It’s called <a href="http://www.the350project.net/home.html">The <strong>3/50 Project</strong></a>… and I love it!  The whole idea is to pick <strong>three independently-owned local businesses</strong> and <strong>spend $50</strong> with each of them (thus the 3/50 concept!).  If we did this each month, it would generate <strong>$42.6 BILLION in revenue</strong>. Can you even<em> imagine</em> that?  I think it sounds amazing.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">So, I don’t want to rain on your parade (I know some of you may love Black Friday) but somewhere along the line,<strong> let’s give some ‘locally-owned-love’….</strong></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">… as the figures tell us, <strong>it can make quite a difference.</strong></p>

<p>I’ve talked about <a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/more-unregulated-terms-you-should-know/">pesticide-free &amp; chlorine-free</a>, <a href="../do-you-know-what-the-%E2%80%9Cnon-toxic%E2%80%9D-label-means/"> non-toxic</a> labeling, <a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/%E2%80%9Cunscented%E2%80%9D-vs-%E2%80%9Cfragrance-free%E2%80%9D-know-the-difference/">fragrance-free vs. unscented</a>, <a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/do-you-know-what-your-plu-produce-labels-mean/">PLU produce labels</a> and <a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/%E2%80%9Ccertified-organic%E2%80%9D-vs-%E2%80%9Corganic-ingredients%E2%80%9D-the-difference/">certified-organic vs. organic ingredients</a>.</p>
<p>Now I have a few more that you<em> should </em>know about: <strong> “Green”,</strong> <strong>“Renewable” </strong><strong>and </strong><strong>“Certified Organic”</strong>.  (Have a guess about which ones actually mean something?)</p>
<p>Well, it appears that <strong>“Certified Organic” is the <em>only</em> trustworthy label in this group</strong>.  Certified Organic is st<img class="alignright size-full wp-image-12241" title="grn label" src="../wp-content//grn-label.jpg" alt="grn label" width="126" height="116" />rictly defined and regulated by the USDA. <strong> “Green”</strong> and <strong>“Renewable”</strong>, on the other hand, mean <strong>NOTHING!</strong> They are <strong>undefined</strong> and, once again, <strong>completely unregulated</strong>.</p>
<p>Like some of the other terms I mentioned,<strong> any manufacturer can place these words on their label</strong> to give you peace of mind about what you’re purchasing.  And ONCE AGAIN <strong>they can do it</strong>, just because the terms aren’t regulated.  That doesn’t mean that ALL products that use these terms aren’t legitimate, but the problems is that it’s sometimes difficult to <em><strong>really</strong></em> know.</p>
<p><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-12242" style="margin: 3px 9px;" title="renwable label" src="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/wp-content//renwable-label.jpg" alt="renwable label" width="116" height="116" />There’s so much greenwashing happening… the best thing to do is to only <strong>select products that have legitimate, regulated terms</strong> associated with them.  Otherwise, like that box of chocolates, ‘you never know what you’re gonna get’!</p>
<p>So, it’s time again to break out that notepad, just to keep it straight since, sadly,<strong> we can’t always believe what the labels are attempting to tell us.</strong></p>

										</div><p><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-12043" style="margin: 3px 9px;" title="produce bags" src="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/wp-content//produce-bags.jpg" alt="produce bags" width="139" height="124" />When we make food choices for our families, we often <strong>put most of our effort into what we’re buying</strong> but, there is another part of the equation.</p>
<p><strong>How is your purchase packaged? </strong> I get really annoyed when I see lovely organic eggs placed in a polystyrene container.  Nope, that’s not green at all because, while it can be upcycled, it certainly can’t be recycled.</p>
<p><strong>Take a closer look:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li><a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/reusable-produce-bags-that-don%E2%80%99t-pollute/"><strong>Mesh bags</strong> </a>– they’re a green mama&#8217;s best friend for purchasing fresh produce.  Don’t cart home a mountain of plastic bags… use your own bags instead. (But if you forget, <a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/so-what-happens-to-your-%E2%80%9Cother%E2%80%9D-plastic-bags/">return those plastic bags to the store </a>for recycling).</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/the-glass-is-half-full%E2%80%A6-but-broken-it%E2%80%99s-trash/"><strong>Glass</strong></a> – it’s a dream container. Not only can it be recycled but it can be safely reused.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><strong><a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/reasons-to-recycle-the-facts/">Aluminum cans</a> </strong>– yes, it’s recyclable but many also worry about leaching into the contents.<img class="alignright size-full wp-image-12045" title="glss jar" src="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/wp-content//glss-jar.jpg" alt="glss jar" width="123" height="123" /></li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><strong><a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/things-you-should-know-about-recycling-paper/">Paper</a> packaging </strong>– it often gets contaminated from food residue or has a wax coating, making it unrecyclable.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/our-plastic-planet/"><strong>Plastic</strong></a> – some of it is recyclable, but it’s also made from fossil fuels.  And, would you believe, only about 4% of plastics ever get recycled! (Plus, many also worry about plastics leaching toxins into the food.)</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><strong><a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/a-better-way-to-recycle-boxes/">Cardboard</a> or paperboard </strong>– definitely “Recycling 101”… make sure it reaches your recycling can.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><strong><a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/take-it-home%E2%80%A6-leave-the-%E2%80%98foam/">Polystyrene</a> </strong>(often called Styrofoam) – covered in my “egg” comment… avoid it!</li>
</ul>
<p>The moral of the story is to <strong>consider the packaging of what you purchase</strong> right along WITH your purchase.  You <strong>CAN bring your own containers</strong> for bulk foods, the meat and deli counter, produce… and you’ll earn a green star for being<strong> “as green as you can be!”</strong></p>

<p>But school time is looming and it’s time to prepare. So, <strong>while you’re prepping your list</strong> (the <em>long </em>list!) of everything they need, <strong>keep these tidbits in mind</strong> to help keep it on the green side:</p>
<ul>
<li><strong><span style="color: #000000;">Check your “stock”</span> </strong>– you may already have supplies at home; some may even be leftover from last year, so check carefully before you buy.</li>
<li><span style="color: #008000;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Look for recycled content</strong></span> </span>– notebooks, <strong><a href="../simple-green-tip-ditch-your-disposable-pen-habit/">pens</a></strong>, pencils, folders, binders and even backpacks… there are lots of options out there made from recycled content, so be wise when you choose. Also, choose paper, paperboard or canvas over plastics.</li>
<li><span style="color: #008000;"><strong><span style="color: #000000;">Waste-free lunches</span> </strong></span>– plan to pack your kids’ lunches      with reusable lunch kits like those from <strong><a href="http://www.kidskonserve.com/">Kid</a></strong><a href="http://www.kidskonserve.com/"><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-11981" style="margin: 3px 9px;" title="citiznpp kit" src="../wp-content//citiznpp-kit2.jpg" alt="citiznpp kit" width="129" height="129" /></a><strong><a href="http://www.kidskonserve.com/">s Konserve</a></strong> or <strong><a href="http://www.citizenpip.com/">Citizen      Pip</a></strong>.  Also, opt for <a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/reusable-isnt-just-for-shopping-bags-anymore%E2%80%A6/"><strong>reusable containers, bottles</strong></a>, real      silverware and cloth napkins over anything single-use or disposable, and      make sure everything is BPA-free.</li>
<li><strong><span style="color: #000000;">Backpacks and totes</span> </strong>– as exciting as it seems to purchase new every year, convince your kids that if it’s still functional, it’s still usable.  If you can, also steer them away from something “character” based, so when they outgrow the character you don’t feel forced into a replacement. And when you do need to replace one, consider <strong><a href="../the-forgotten-%E2%80%9Cr%E2%80%9D-%E2%80%A6-aww-poor-%E2%80%9Creuse%E2%80%9D/">donating</a></strong> the outgrown version and make sure the new one is PVC-free.</li>
<li><span style="color: #008000;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Clothes</strong></span> </span>– we all know how quickly kids grow, but the bigger they get the slower they grow.  Take a little time for a “try-on” session.  If it’s not outgrown, no need to replace it just yet.  When it no longer fits, be sure to<strong> <a href="../the-forgotten-%E2%80%9Cr%E2%80%9D-%E2%80%A6-aww-poor-%E2%80%9Creuse%E2%80%9D/">donate everything to organizations</a></strong> that provide clothing to those in need.  Even <strong><a href="../recycling-a-wardrobe-purge-donate-swap-sell/">consignment shops and sales or swaps</a></strong> are great resources for giving or getting items that still have usefulness.</li>
</ul>
<p><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-11982" style="margin: 3px 9px;" title="schoolbus" src="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/wp-content//schoolbus2.jpg" alt="schoolbus" width="93" height="93" />Whether you get teary-eyed at the idea of sending your kids back to school, or the first day couldn’t come soon enough (<em>I&#8217;ll be a teary-eyed one!</em>) <strong>be sure to earn a “green star” for your efforts before they go!</strong></p>

<p>Many people were going to visit our house.  The keg was calling out for a party.  Do you buy <strong>disposable cups or reusables? </strong> Quick! Make your choice.</p>
<p>It sounds crazy, I know, but I found myself facing this ridiculous question. <strong> What… do… you … do?</strong></p>
<p>I went to the dollar store. I bought cups. <strong>I bought reusable cups.</strong> I walked away from the disposables… and guess what?  We were just fine.  Everyone followed the rules.  They used the cups. They deposited them back into the kitchen.  They found their way into <a href="http://www.momgoesgreen.com/skipping-steps-in-dish-washing-lots-of-conservation/">a (full) dishwasher</a>. They were washed. They were stored for the next gathering. <strong>We threw NOTHING away. </strong>We won&#8217;t need to spend <em>more money</em> next time either.<strong> </strong>The next time, &#8220;we already have cups&#8221;.<strong><br />
</strong></p>
<p>Success. Yes. No trash. That’s all you need to do.  Wise choices, my friends.  <strong>Wise choices.</strong></p>
