Okay my friends… it’s as simple as this. We had a choice.
Many people were going to visit our house. The keg was calling out for a party. Do you buy disposable cups or reusables? Quick! Make your choice.
It sounds crazy, I know, but I found myself facing this ridiculous question. What… do… you … do?
I went to the dollar store. I bought cups. I bought reusable cups. I walked away from the disposables… and guess what? We were just fine. Everyone followed the rules. They used the cups. They deposited them back into the kitchen. They found their way into a (full) dishwasher. They were washed. They were stored for the next gathering. We threw NOTHING away. We won’t need to spend more money next time either. The next time, “we already have cups”.
Success. Yes. No trash. That’s all you need to do. Wise choices, my friends. Wise choices.
Sunday is the day to celebrate fantastic fathers! Our Sunday will be spent celebrating my amazing husband…”fab dad” to our kids!!! As always, he’s literally asked for “nothing” and just wants to spend time with me and the kids… likely fishing, picnicking and enjoying what’s slated to be a wonderful “weather day” (Phew!). Every year he just wants to enjoy the pleasures of the great outdoors and, of course, his family!
Hopefully you already have some terrific plans in the works, but if you are pressed for that last minute gift idea, here is my list of “great green ones” that are easy to find (or “do”) and he’s sure to love:
Plant a tree – it’s amazing to watch them grow over time, so add a special one to the yard. (We have one in its ninth year… it’s just incredible and we have loved watching it grow and bloom!)
Make a gift – recycle, upcycle and reuse! Your own home is the perfect place to find supplies to create something that says “I cared enough” to make this for you!
Electronic solar charger – free power from the sun! And dads love their electronics.
Bamboo knives or grilling set –incredible bamboo is sustainable and this is perfect for the grill master!
Organic brew – ideal for accompanying him at the grill!
Reusable water bottle– to keep him hydrated while he’s working hard or working out!
iTunes – no more CDs to eventually end up in the trash.
Solar powered landscaping lights or a solar flashlight – (are you seeing the trend?) again, free energy!
Adopt nature and animals in his name or give a membership to a nature center or arboretum – my list of favorites is in a previous post here.
“Give your time” and get outdoors – make him king for the day and hike, bike, picnic, fish… whatever makes him happy, your time will make him the happiest!
With that I simply want to wish my amazing husband another wonderful Father’s Day! He is the best husband, the greatest dad ever, a dedicated son, and works so hard so that I can be home with our kids. He single-handedly supports our family AND he’s a published author (with more on the way!) and I am so very, very proud of him! Add to that the fact that he tolerates ME, goes along with my green ways and encourages me (always!)… I couldn’t ask for more. We love you, honey!
Happy Father’s Day to every amazing dad out there! We celebrate you! And for every dad that is joining this mom in her journey to going green… THANK YOU!
Now I have two more that you do need to know about: “Pesticide-Free” and “Chlorine-Free”.
Maybe you’ll be surprised and maybe you won’t, but the reality is… NEITHER of these labels or terms mean a thing either. They are undefined and, once again, completely unregulated.
Like some of the other terms I mentioned, any manufacturer can place these words on their label to give you peace of mind about what you’re purchasing. And ONCE AGAIN they can do it, just because the terms aren’t regulated. That doesn’t mean that ALL products that use these terms aren’t legitimate, but the problems is it’s sometimes difficult to really know.
I can add a good note though… it just so happens that the term “Dolphin Safe” IS strictly defined, so when you see this term, you can rest assured about your purchase! As a life-long dolphin lover, I’m happy that this actually means something positive.
We have quite a list going, don’t we??? Maybe it’s time to break out a notepad, just to keep it straight since, sadly, we can’t always believe what the labels are attempting to tell us.
The idea of chicken nuggets turns my stomach. I know they have (somehow) become a staple of American kids’ diets, but for my entire life, I have found them disgusting.
Recently there has been a bunch of hub-bub about what’s really in those chicken nuggets… and patties too (and I really wonder if they are worth of having “chicken” in the name at all!).
My kids, like me, consider them fairly gross. Have you SEEN this photo? Yes, that pink stuff right there (that looks like strawberry soft-serve ice cream) IS the stuff those nuggets are made of.
Want to know what’s in them? It’s called “mechanically separated chicken”. A machine actually removes all of the disgusting leftovers after the quality parts are removed… it removes the tendons, tissue, cartilage, organs, and other chicken extras, and grinds them into a fine poultry paste. An ammonia wash is used to kill the bacteria and, because it looks (and now tastes!) horrible, artificial colors and flavors need to be added to make them edible. In reality, with all of the other additives, only about 50% is even some chicken “part”… and that doesn’t even get into the nutritional side of the story. The sodium and fat content is appalling.
I tried to show this to my kids and my daughter said, emphatically, “No… Mom! I can’t watch!” If you want your kids to break-the-habit, try to get them to take a look. (I actually have two videos… this one shows the kids rejecting the nuggets, but I will warn you… the embedded video belowshows kids STILL willing to eat the grossness they saw… a testament to how we’ve allowed this “food item” to become acceptable!)
Just like any other food item, not all chicken nuggets and patties are created equal. There are some semi-decent products out there but, buyer beware. If it says “mechanically separated chicken” on the package, throw the box and RUN! … because that icky pink stuff is what you’re buying.
I’m a “flip-flop girl”… I LOOOOVE my flip-flops! And most of my friends know about my obsession too. If it’s above 50 degrees… FLIP-FLOP TIME!!!
It’s needless to say, however, that the lifespan of a flip-flop can be somewhat limited. They wear out, they break and, well, sometimes they just start looking pathetic.
Want to help those tired, poor flip-flops live on? (Clearly, I also enjoy “saying” flip-flop!…) but sincerely… there is a fabulous use for them after they outlive their original purpose.
From now until May 21, Terracycle has teamed up with Old Navy stores to collect those flip-flops. Deposit them in the collection bins at any Old Navy location in the U.S. and Terracycle will be turning them into playground materials.
The playgrounds will be given to a few schools and organizations that participate in the Terracycle Brigades too. My children’s school participates in the Drink Pouch Brigade so hey, who knows… my old flip-flops may just end up being a part of my kids’ playground!
We’re all preparing for summer (anxiously!) and pulling out everything that has been put away for far too long. If your seasonal wardrobe includes some flip-flops that have seen better days, make your way to an Old Navy store before they make their way to the trash…
I recently join the White Cloud Roll-volution! I found the best 100% recycled-content toilet paper on earth (White Cloud’s GreenEarth brand, of course!), but my husband STILL wasn’t replacing the roll… yes, you understand that feeling when you unexpectedly find only two squares remaining!
I said he needed a lot of practice and now, our friends at White Cloud are giving us the upper hand without the added expense. In honor of Earth Day, they’ve added 50% more to the GreenEarth packages (that’s THREE extra rolls!). I think I’ve tried every recycled brand and honestly, the others don’t compare in quality. Fortunately GreenEarth is surprisingly soft, so you don’t “feel” like you’re using recycled content toilet paper! Afterall, we don’t want a family revolution when it’s not up to par!
And, by the way, their FREE offer is extended to their paper towels too (you get an extra roll!)… that’s especially helpful for those of us dealing with family members that like to grab TWO when only ONE would do! (Yea, I live with them also!) Now, you can get an extra roll while you work on adjusting their over-usage habit! They ARE super-absorbent, so that will help in your “retraining” quest too.
With the way we all seem to use (and abuse) our stock of toilet paper and paper towels, I have to continue to give the GreenEarth brand a big green “thumbs up”. I love knowing that I’m not needlessly sacrificing trees… PLUS they’ve taken amazing strides in reducing their energy consumption and greenhouse emissions, and they recycle big time! (See why I love GreenEarth?!)
White Cloud GreenEarth is still available exclusively at Walmart, so go and get yourself some… and some extra too… for FREE!
Thanks, White Cloud GreenEarth!
(Disclosure: I am a White Cloud blogger. While I am compensated for my time, my opinions are entirely my own. White Cloud neither directs nor edits my posts, comments, views or opinions.)
I made a confession quite some time ago declaring that I’m a “method head”… yes, I am clearly addicted to method products. And I’ve talked about them again, and again, aaaaand again.
I just happen to love pure products that are committed to a healthy environment and a safe “us”. Since I started using their products they just get better and better. They’re constantly improving them and I happen to like that too.
I’ve been using theirlaundry detergent forever (okay, not really, but for quite a long time). Now they’re super concentrated, so just one bottle tackles 50 loads of laundry, and the pump makes sure you don’t overuse. Add to that the fact that the ingredients are 95% natural and renewable, in a recyclable bottle, and oh yea… you guessed it… the love and addiction continues.
Now they’re making a “Laundry Room Love” music video where YOU can be one of their stars! Just visit their Facebook page to get the details and learn how to submit your award-winning performance. As an extra reward, you’ll get a $2 off coupon at the end of the how-to video. Savings… nice!
They’re also hosting a little giveaway here at Mom Goes Green. Would you like to see why I love method and score a bottle of your own? Well, just leave a comment here saying you’d like to win, or send a Twitter message that includes a reply to @momgoesgreen and a link to this blog. Facebook friends can also leave a comment to be entered. The winners will be randomly selected on April 22!
Now, join me in some “Laundry Room Love”… grab your video camera, perform your heart out, submit your entry, become a star, earn a coupon and enter to win my giveaway! Phew!… (and you wondered what you were going to do today)… get to lovin’!
Well now, how about “non-toxic”? Do you know what the label means? Let me tell you…
… it means NOTHING. The reality is that the non-toxic labeling is NOT regulated by the FDA, so it literally means nothing.
From commercial cleaners to cosmetics, when it says it’s non-toxic it doesn’t say anything beneficial about the product. Any manufacturer can place this on their label to give you peace of mind about what you’re purchasing. And sadly they can do it, just because the term isn’t regulated.
I, myself, have been misled when I thought that I was buying something safe. In fact, I even bought a tube of non-toxic face paint for my son’s Halloween costume (so I could draw on a scraggly pirate beard!) but when it came down to it, I sacrificed my expensive eyeliner instead, simply because I knew it was safe.
Sure, there are quality products that will have this term on the label, but the next time you see “non-toxic”, don’t make assumptions about what’s NOT in the product because you could be getting more than you bargained for (and more than these words are telling you).
Two weeks ago I wrote an article about “Antibiotics in our Food Supply”. I got some interesting emails as a result (after I addressed the fact that I had been accused of writing “fear based content”). Again, that’s never my intent, but anyhow… a reader also sent me a fact and a link. This, too, is worthy of sharing.
“Today, 7 out of every 10 items on grocery stores shelves contain ingredients that have been genetically modified. In other words, scientists are using new technology to transfer the genes of one species to another, and these altered foods are in the market stream. And yet many scientists have concerns about the safety — to people, wildlife and the environment — of this process. That’s why consumers in Asia and Europe are demanding that their food be free of genetically modified ingredients.”
Take that however you’d like but I will say again and again that I hate my foods being “messed with”! (And now I will jump off my soapbox and just continue…) As for the link, it directed me to the Organic Consumers Association site. I checked it out and it’s fantastic.
There have been a few occasions, over the course of this blog, that I have been accused of writing too much “fear based content”. Hmm… okay. Well, I’ve never really looked at it that way… I’ve always thought I was just sharing tips, ideas and the things I have learned or have come to “know” in helping others live greener, healthier lives…
So, for those who don’t like that type of information, I’ll preface this by saying that you’re probably not going to like what I’m about to share.
Nonetheless, I find this next bit of information really bothersome and I happen to think it’s worthy of sharing. Okay, now you’ve been lovingly warned…
The concern is this… evidence shows that the ever increasing use of antibiotics on agricultural animals (used for food) is contributing to the growth of bacteria that is resistant to the antibiotics we use to treat human illnesses.
Most often, they are not used for therapeutic reasons either. They are used to increase the growth, weight and size of animals more rapidly, and also attempt to control diseases when the animals are raised in such cramped confinement quarters. There is also the need to maintain the animal’s illnesses because they are fed with things that are unnatural to their digestive systems. (Regular readers might recall a previous post about agricultural animals actually being fed junk food!)
I could go on and on about this topic but, suffice it to say, this is the exact reason all of the meats, eggs and milk I purchase for my family are antibiotic-free, steroid-free and growth hormone-free…
While I hope you don’t think my advice is fear-based, I have to be honest and say this information does scare me…
