Many people were going to visit our house. The keg was calling out for a party. Do you buy disposable cups or reusables? Quick! Make your choice.

It sounds crazy, I know, but I found myself facing this ridiculous question. What… do… you … do?

I went to the dollar store. I bought cups. I bought reusable cups. I walked away from the disposables… and guess what? We were just fine. Everyone followed the rules. They used the cups. They deposited them back into the kitchen. They found their way into a (full) dishwasher. They were washed. They were stored for the next gathering. We threw NOTHING away. We won’t need to spend more money next time either. The next time, “we already have cups”.

Success. Yes. No trash. That’s all you need to do. Wise choices, my friends. Wise choices.

I need to preface this with pointing out that electronics, unfortunately, create an amazing amount of e-waste when they have run their course of usefulness or get replaced. Our TV has seen better days, and that was the reason for the trip. Our “outgoing” TV is 17 years old and has reached the point where words on the TV were difficult to read and scrolling type is nearly impossible.

That TV will still be donated to a local charity that assists recovering addicts in setting up a home and, although it’s feasible for us to replace it, I know someone in need of assistance will appreciate our donation when they have “nothing”. On top of that, our donation keeps it from needlessly being tossed away… it DOES work, afterall.

Okay, back to my original story… Best Buy. My discovery? They have these new FANTASTIC kiosks just inside the entry to their stores that allow us to drop-off all of our e-waste for recycling, repair or repurposing. I’m talking everything… cellphones & chargers, CDs & DVDs, game controllers and components, remotes, printer cartridges, power cords, and even ‘empty’ gift cards! I… LOVE… IT!!!

These kiosks are available in EVERY store around the country, and there happen to be about 1100 of them! Find your store here.

While I believe that an electronic or ‘gadget’ still in working condition should be donated, this is the best source I’ve seen so far for a central drop-off location when they’ve run their course. Check out their site for more details and to learn about their program for the “big” electronics too.

In the meanwhile, sort through your house, fill a box of e-waste and know that you’ve FINALLY found a place for them!

It sure does, but did you know that one in five toilets actually has an extremely wasteful leak? And these leaks can waste anywhere from 30 to (yes!) 500 GALLONS of water per day!

You may presume that you would hear the water or see the leak, but this isn’t the case. It often goes undetected. It can also increase during nighttime hours when less water is being used and the pressure increases. So while you sleep, your water bill could be drastically rising and you could be wasting crucially important water.

There is a very simple way to know for sure:

Just put a few drops of food coloring in the tank. Wait about 15 to 20 minutes and if color shows up in the bowl, you have a leak, my friend.

I recommend doing this for all toilets in your home as late in the evening as possible. The problem is often a poorly fitting flapper valve and the solution is simple… just replace it!

I’m still combating my suddenly excessive water bills that started a year ago, but we’ve checked for toilet leaks and they’re not the problem… (back to the battle with the water department!).

While the task doesn’t sound very glamorous, it’s certainly worth testing just to be sure! That “one in five” may be in your very own home!

Through all 292 posts from Mom Goes Green my most popular post (by far!) discussed the Great Pacific Garbage Patch… the sickening, swirling area of approximately seven million tons of plastic debris and waste floating in the Pacific Ocean that is roughly twice the size of Texas (and some say, twice the size of the entire U.S.). Some even believe it is worse than we originally expected.

It troubles me to no end. Recently Charles Moore, the unfortunate “founder” of this garbage patch, was a guest on David Letterman. While this isn’t the most scientific forum I can think of, if it gets the message out to millions of viewers, well, that works for me! Take a look at the interview, including Part II.

He also shares some of his heartbreaking discoveries in this presentation… how can we turn a blind eye to this undeniable destruction?

So what do we do about all of this? We need, I repeat, NEED to decrease our dependence on plastics. While we can’t un-do the damage that has been done, we can help slow the ongoing contribution of this disgusting, harmful garbage that is polluting our oceans, waterways, wildlife, fish and, ultimately… US!

Recently our family also visited a beach on Lake Erie. While the kids were playing on the beach and I looked for sea glass (okay… in this case, LAKE glass) I was also heartbroken to find more plastics than anything else washed ashore. Sadly, what I encountered was bottles, bottle caps, lighters, pens, tampon applicators, plastic bags, combs, brushes, and plastic toys… this isn’t a narrative on Cleveland, this is an example of human neglect for our planet… everyday, everywhere.

Please, think about what you are buying. Think about where it goes when it is discarded. Think about the irreversible damage that is created. We can do better… a lot better.

Ahh… Fridays. The infamous Friday night “Carry-Out Food and Movie Nite” in the Mom Goes Green household. The night when I don’t have to think about “what’s for dinner” and instead can rely on the simple question of where to get the food.

While this has become a tradition for us, it also brings the concern of all the waste that can be created when I don’t do the cookin’! Who hasn’t experienced this with their order?: large, rustling bag; unneeded plastic utensils; mountains of paper napkins; a sea of condiment packets; towers of containers; single-use cups… the list could go on and on (and that list has a harsh consequence for landfill waste).

So, consider this when placing your next order:

Coffee – Americans use approximately 15 BILLION paper coffee cups per year. If your order includes coffee, bring your own cup… they’ll fill it for you.

Condiments – really, if you’re taking it home, you probably have the same condiments waiting for you in your refrigerator. Instead of thinking “Well, I PAID for them”, think “No thanks. I have them already” and they aren’t in a dozen tiny packets, cups and containers.

Napkins – skip ‘em. Tell them you don’t need any since you probably already use cloth napkins at home…. right? Right.

Utensils – goes without saying… we all DEFINITELY have those at home, so tell them you don’t need them either.

Containers – many restaurants provide you with some decent containers but, while it’s nearly impossible to refuse them, you can reuse them. Clean them, reuse them and consider them the next time you reach for a Ziploc or other disposable storage container.

Cups – I certainly voiced my dislike of all the kids disposable cups during a dine-in meal, but many of those are also reusable, for beverages, storing craft supplies and lots of other projects.

Bags – walk in with your own. Tell them you don’t need their oversized plastic version… after all, you ALWAYS keep your reusable bags in your car…. riiiight?

If you follow all of these suggestions, imagine this… you would have zero-waste…. AND you would have a nice relaxing evening, with a clear conscience and absolutely zero cooking too!

Greywater may be a new term to you… once again, this one was recently a new one for me too!

Greywater is defined as the “waste water generated from bathing, showering, dishwashing and laundry”. Initial thoughts might sound something like “well… ick.” Sure, I certainly don’t recommend you grab a glass(!), but there are plenty of household uses for this water (as long as you aren’t using harsh cleansers and detergents).

Think about watering your indoor plants, outdoor plants and shrubbery, or washing your car. This water is ideal.

All you need to do is add a handled bucket to your shower, scoop out a bucket or watering can full from your bath, or add the bucket to your utility tub when your washer is draining. Plants will actually thrive from the content of this water and your car happens not to care if the water has a bit of added body wash or laundry detergent.

Considering this greywater accounts for somewhere between 50%-80% of residential water waste, conserving and using it will certainly amount to a lot more than just “a drop in the bucket”.

First, the backstory: We are, without doubt, a water conserving family. We have water efficient appliances, have taught our kids to conserve and have put all of the best water saving tips in place. Our usual water bill runs between $45-$65 per quarter. The accompanying sewer usage fee costs us a fairly equal rate per quarter, so for this time of year, I was expecting a bill of just under a hundred dollars.

The bill arrived. (Hold onto your hats:) $260!!! Did I choke? Yes… I did. (And I also swore profusely!)

After 57 minutes(!) of waiting for a City of Cleveland Division of Water customer service representative they put my bill “on hold” and schedule a service appointment.

Yesterday the tech arrived, ran all the tests, said everything was in working order – no leaks, no problems detected - and that he would report his findings to the office. I was advised to call tomorrow for a “decision”. What EXACTLY does THAT mean?… a “decision”?

The interesting thing is that the tech also assessed our previous 16 months of bills and commented “Wow, your family really IS efficient!” According to him, a family of four typically uses just over 3 MCF units per quarter (this is the measurement of usage in cubic feet per thousand). He also says, when they are teenagers, it normally raises to 4! We have been consistently at, or just below, 2… yes, 2!

So what gives? Honest answer… I have no idea. And what are we supposed to do? The curious thing… my mother-in-law’s last quarter bill? $500+! This quarter? $1200! WHAT is going on with the Cleveland Division of Water? How do you battle what they claim is true when you simply know it cannot be?

Has this ever happened to you? What is the solution? Because this time, I have absolutely NO ANSWERS…

Another tip is to buy in bulk. Sure, you’re buying a bigger package, but it’s still less packaging than what is needed for multiple smaller sized packages versus the one larger size!

Final tip… avoid excess packaging. Over-wrapping and over-packaging results in excess waste, recyclable or not.

So “concentrate”, “go big” and “keep it as skimpy as possible”… wow, this post has gone someplace else entirely…

Well, last month my laptop died. (RIP dear XPS, my beloved refurbished computer!) Not a pleasant experience if I want to keep this blog going, so I’ve resorted to borrowing my husband’s laptop in the meanwhile (and it’s not easy when he needs to keep borrowing it back!).

So he has finally said it’s time for Mom Goes Green to get a new computer of my very own. Enter dilemma: laptop vs. desktop.

I did my research, because I also want to make the greenest choice, and here is what I found:

Laptops use considerably less energy than desktop computers. In some cases, the savings are somewhere between 50-80% less, depending on the model. Energy savings = environmental choice. (winner: laptop)

Laptops have batteries, so they can actually utilize their own stored energy for use. (winner: laptop)

Laptops are considerable smaller than desktops therefore, when it comes time for disposal, there is less electronic “waste” and fewer parts to be recycled. (winner: laptop)

The parts contained within laptops are harder to recycle and refurbish than desktop computer parts. (winner: desktop)

Desktops typically last longer than laptops since laptops are more fragile and the mobility-factor often means a greater likelihood of damage and a shorter life. Laptops are also more expensive to repair (e.g. $500 bucks to fix mine… augh!) and are therefore more likely to get discarded more frequently. (winner: desktop)

The toxic materials in desktops are much less than those in laptops (due to the batteries and other materials contained within the computer) so laptop disposal means more polluting toxins. (winner: desktop)

So there you have it. As I see it, it’s a wash. Choose what suits your needs. There is no real environmental choice (unless you “go computer-less!”… something that’s unlikely for any of us!).

Yesterday was only the second day for our daughter being back at school after what felt like an all-too-short summer and, after once again taking the position of Recycling & Environmental Programs Chairperson at her school, I’ve already found myself with Mission #1 for the year… yea, in all of TWO DAYS!

It seems that our children are actually being forced to be wasteful in the lunchroom and my head is just spinning. The situation was brought to light by a close friend who volunteered to help new students become accustom to the cafeteria line process and when her story began with an “oh, let me tell you about THIS!” I knew it wasn’t going to be good.

The problem? All students purchasing a lunch are forced to take all items on the lunch menu, even if they don’t want them! My friend told me I probably would have choked at how many unopened single-serve applesauce containers met the trash can. My heart just sank. Not only is this horribly wasteful, but can you imagine how many food pantries could benefit from all of the unused foods that are thrown away daily?!?

I can’t imagine what policy is in place that literally makes this waste a “rule”, but I certainly intend to find out! Maybe it’s so the school can say that, while they can’t control what the children eat, it was at least given to them… but if this is the case, it’s a lousy standard.

My hope is to find a place that would accept these unopened foods and allow them to benefit. With so many regulations, it may be hard to do. And then I will need to get the school on board, so that will likely be another huge administrative hurdle, but this one ladies and gents, Mom Goes Green is taking on!!! I never knew about this before, since our daughter is a daily waste-free lunch girl(!), but now I NEED to try to make something happen. It WILL be my first mission.

If you have a similar story to share and ideas of how to resolve this dilemma, please let me know… I would love to hear it! And if this story sounds similar to a situation in your own child’s school, consider joining me and see what you can do to make a positive change!

Less waste means less trash, and food for those who need it… in that situation everyone wins!
