Mary - if you look again at the post above you might have missed where I wrote another post immediately following this one that clarified this exact point (just click on "the FULL story" at the end of this post), but thank you for your input and bringing this to my attention as well!

Hi, just happened to come across your site and I thought I would share something important that you have overlooked. Much of the contamination of pesticides in produce comes from inside the food. Many pesticides are fat soluble, which means cell membranes can absorb the pesticides and the pesticides remain inside the food. Washing your food is a great start, but its best to buy organic if you afford it. I have done my masters in Public Health in Environmental Health from UC Berkeley, so I'm not just pulling this out of thin air. Much of my research was about pesticides and effects on children. Hope this helps.

will - no cheap shot intended... at all. I meant nothing by it... just joking around actually. Should have put a smiley face on it! :) Sorry if I offended you. Sincerely. I am an advocate of organic produce and I respect and agree with your point. I wish I could eliminate conventionally-grown, pesticide laden produce all together. I was just trying to give an option for consumers who honestly can't afford organics or don't have access to all of the organics some of us do. This option was given with a fair amount of research. But no, nothing can eliminate all of the pesticides unless it is organic and grown without pesticides.

That was a cheap shot Doreen. I work hard for my money like everyone. But I am willing to spend a little more because I care about the planet. So you are going to avocate (with your consumer dollars) spraying chemicals into our environment because you think you can wash them off in some salt water? Where do those chemicals end up Dor? Do they just magically disappear? Not very "Green" at all my dear!

OneGreenMommy - I'm not sure about soap, honestly. The issue is that pesticides contain oil, so that's the reason good ole' fashion "water alone" won't do the trick. I believe anything we can attempt to do is better than nothing at all!

Doreen - Since we've been eating loads of apples lately, I've been washing them with good old dish soap (it's a healthy kind) even my kids have gotten used to doing so. And then I realized that while I love a good zest of the lemon, those need to be washed too! Good to know about the salt. I wonder if the soap is a bad thing though? Again, it's natural soap and doesn't have phosphates or fragrances or anything like that.

Voyage - Great! Glad you liked it!

will - well, HELLO Mr. Snippy-Pants!!! Sheesh! No, I am not freakin' kidding you... the salt will not absorb into the produce, nor will it leave any residue or flavor. And considering you can buy fine grain sea salt for $1 per pound or less, "me thinks" this will be less than the cost of organics for those on a strict budget or less access! Maybe I should have called you Mr. Money Bags instead!!!

OMG...You have got to be freakin' kidding me? JUST BUY ORGANIC IN THE FIRST PLACE! Your a big sweetie pie Green Mom but I have no desire to give my veggies a salt bath. I think the cost of the water and salt would equal organic in the end if you did the math.
